at $3 a pop ($3.50 for the maple bacon), these aren't your average dunkin' donuts donuts (but there's one of those down the street if that's what you're after). i found them to be worth the splurge, but i wouldn't make a frequent habit out of it. if you want a taste, be sure to keep an eye on their facebook page for announcements as they've been selling out pretty early most days. they're open from 9 am until selling out on thursdays through sundays, and they also carry dulce de leche cinnamon rolls, ocean ave pops (fun-flavored popsicles!), coffee, and spindrift sodas.

union square donuts are one of the most loved donuts in massachusetts. we tried the ‘most popular’ brown butter hazelnut crunch and ‘the original’ chocolate cake donut!
both were absolutely delicious ❤

another heralded spot in the suburb of somerville, union square donuts has long been considered the boston metro’s preeminent distributor of artisan donuts and although some may be put off by prices that range $3-4 the fact that the place continues to sell out each and every day should be enough to suggest that the hype is at least part-justifiable

another heralded spot in the suburb of somerville, union square donuts has long been considered the boston metro’s preeminent distributor of artisan donuts and although some may be put off by prices that range $3-4 the fact that the place continues to sell out each and every day should be enough to suggest that the hype is at least part-justifiable.

using buzzwords like “small batch” and recently expanding their reach to brookline where harvard students are sure to be a market force, union square donuts on bow street is a friendly sort of place where reclaimed woods and light music overlook a thriving market of all ages and with servers far more helpful than most ‘hip’ spots elsewhere the line progresses as an endless trickle, a half-dozen fried treats ringing in at just over $20.

no doubt using good ingredients, the bases a crumbly buttercake or eggy sort of yeast-risen brioche scratch-mixed and fried on-site with toppings also made in house, first tastes of union square’s goods came from a ‘creamsicle’ that reminisced of hostess yellow cupcake with more dignity and less sweetness while the strawberry ring topped with reduced-fruit frosting was not quite on-par with blackbird’s honey-kissed version, but pretty excellent anyway.

dressing up the next puffy circle in boozy caramel that came across almost savory thanks to the salt, another interesting bite was the brown butter glazed “premium” selection studded with hazelnuts while the pocket of custard beneath chocolate ganache and bursting maine blueberries inside a cinnamon sugar pocket were each well worthy of the four dollar investment.

this was my first visit there and i will be back! i went there to get some treats for a client and the staff helped me pick out a great assortment! unfortunately they were out of boston cream but the donut they recommended was fabulous! i can't remember the exact name but it was a staff favorite and had hazelnuts; totally understand why it's a staff favorite! thanks for a great first visit!

i'm a big fan of their toppings, especially the dark chocolate. i'm less a fan of the underlying donut, which is sometimes stiff or gummy and isn't sweet enough or repeatably soft enough to be considered great. the package as a whole, though, is certainly good.

donuts has become a huge commodity lately. if you haven't tried the maple bacon donut from union square you're missing out. they sell out pretty quickly so make sure you get there on time.

silly store. doughnuts are not serious food. it is a hunk of dough fried in grease. most cultures have a version of this. you make a good doughnut by creating a tasty batter with good wheat, yeast and a few other ingredients. then you put it in a tasty oil, like sunflower or cottonseed and coat it with some kind of sugar. that's about it.  the silly, twee, hipster doughnut is just indulgent, wrong-headed silliness. a great doughnut is great because it is simple and made with precision and care. adding bacon, or caramel or twizzlers to a doughnut is irrelevant and duplicitous. it is just intended to draw your attention away from a weak, sloppily-proofed mush of a doughnut that lies underneath.  union square doughnuts are vastly overpriced, and overdecorated.  all of the expensive frippery does not disguise the fact it is not an honestly and simply delicious doughnut.

the salted caramel donut is insanely good! giant and soft and doughy and sweet and sticky. wonderful people working the counter, and the other flavors are incredible as well. my second favorite is the hazelnut crunch.

don't tell my nana, but i think these are the best donuts i've ever had.

people near union square know we have a world class donut place in the neighborhood, and we knew it before the "10 best donut shops in america" articles started including our favorite new little place.

try the... you know what? try everything.

happy national donut day! on this day, i thought i'd share with you my favorite donut shop in boston ... union square donuts! now at their new storefront in somerville, you can find these wonderful fluffy donuts along with counter culture coffee every day until 1 pm (later on the weekends). the flavor that made me fall in love with union square the first time is the sea salted bourbon caramel.

union square donuts is a small, fancy-shmancy doughnut shop in somerville, ma. it is open tuesday-sunday, and closes at 3pm at the latest on the weekends, or when they simply run out of food.  people line up for doughnuts. like down-the-block-in-30*f-weather-at-7am-when-you-are-a-nocturnal-and-thin-blooded-college-student line up.  they are that good. they have a good selection of seasonal flavors, such as apple cider, and pumpkin pie, fancy flavors, like sea salted caramel, and butter roasted hazelnut, and “normal” flavors. i remind you that my team is nothing if not thorough. like all good studies, they determined that vanilla bean was the control sample to ensure accurate comparisons to revolution doughnut   in atlanta.
