tomato pie cafe

i couldn't understand how anyone could tolerate a tomato pie, or why someone would want to squelch her business prospects by naming a cafe after one. then i tried the tomato pie cafe's tomato pie. twice: i also ordered it for dessert. it is remarkable.   for those as lost as i was, let me bear witness: it is a savoury pie. it is not a custard pie (like pumpkin); it has a buttery, herbed crust, a generous melting of oily cheese, big hearty chunks of mild tomato (and sometimes extras like spinach or artichoke), and i suspect some dollops of ricotta. about the only thing bad i can say about it is that, unless you get it right out of the oven, it's served warm, not hot. and sometimes the juicy innards inevitably sog up the flaky bottom. but this is like faulting jesus for having a foreign accent. it is a heavenly pie.   regal rooibos lattes at tomato pie cafe how appropriate, then, that i have spent several lovely sundays at the tomato pie cafe, sitting at a high table by the window, or at the counter, in the garden or blinking in the sunlight of the second floor balcony, gazing reverently across the street at the stone buildings beside historic lititz springs park. in addition to sandwiches with beets and breakfast specials with sausage and fennel, or buttermilk quinoa pancakes with whipped sage butter and maple syrup, tomato pie cafe knows how to make a latte. in fact, they will make one with rich red rooibos (roy-bus) tea that is fragrant and silky and a fraction of the caffeine.   brunch is my love language. few things dismay me more than a lauded local joint with all the trappings of a fancy restaurant (price, decor, attitude) and nondescript food. and few things make me more grateful than wholesome, interesting breakfast options, served with casual consideration in a quirky house. tomato pie cafe wins my (totally unofficial and just now instated) on orange restaurant of the year award. http://www.tomatopiecafe.net/ posted by

my friend and i went here on a tuesday afternoon around 1. i was surprised by how busy it was the entire time we were there, considering it was after typical lunch time. regardless, the food was so delicious! i got the quiche (it was 4 cheese) with the parmesan grit cake, and although i can't remember the name of her food, it was also delicious. i'll definitely be back!

the tomato pie cafe is a place we go to time and again. the signature tomato pie is fantastic, although we have never had anything we didn't love there. great iced teas and coffee drinks, along with tempting dessert options and charming, casual, atmosphere, make this a place you should not miss in lititz.

latest update, 8/17/16:

back to usual form, thankfully - really terrific food and coffee drinks (try the cold brew with milk & honey - amazing). standouts: zucchini benedict, ham & egg panini, western wrap, salmon bagel, and in-season peach-ginger stuffed french toast. really delicious. service was better, too - not overly attentive, but decent. don't forget that, depending on the day, you can enjoy the outdoor patio seating or eat in the lovely upstairs of the house.

12/29/15 update from older review (2014):

usually love this place. today: rudeness, incompetence, and cold food. the
server (he also seems to be the manager, amazingly) and hostess were unapologetic about forgetting service, not providing basics like refills on drinks and condiments, and were unfailingly rude. there was certainly no way to address problems with the entrees! will probably return, given the quality of food, but not if this ever repeats.

unbelievable tastes!. ate at tomato pie tonight for the first time. amazing food! we had the tomato pie and the fig arugula goat cheese flatbread. delicious! service was great, too. not just good--g r e a t! our waitress was fantastic (she wore a funky white fedora).

so why only 4 stars? some muscle-bound lunkhead was hanging out talking to the waitresses, and the whiff of conversation i heard was inappropriate for such a classy place. i had to wait several minutes for three waitresses to notice me standing six feet away while they talked to him and blocked the path of the other two waitresses who were actually working. as a result, a waitress carrying food was bumped by one of the lazy ones and food went everywhere.

to the owner of tomato pie--get your waitstaff in order. the lazy ones are making the place look bad. throw steroid stephen out the door and axe the lazy girls. the hardworking waitresses deserve better. your restaurant is just too darn good to be spoiled by these unnecessary bodies.

this is my new favorite place! it has an artsy vibe, friendly service and best of all, fantastic food. they serve unique dishes and everything i tried was delicious. i got the chicken pesto panini with greens which was great. my mom got the tomato pie and i got a bad case of food envy. before i had a bite of hers, i didn't like tomatoes. i do now, and i spent the rest of the day craving it. oh and the coffee...amazing. i had one of their feature drinks for february, a white chocolate lavender mocha. it was the best cup of coffee i have ever had in my life. and i drink a lot of coffee. i really hope they still have it on the menu next time i'm there. i saw so many things i wanted to try on the menu, i can't wait to go back! oh and they also have some awesome-looking bakery items. so excited to have found this gem.

oh. my. gosh. so good!!! i ha the tomato pie- fresh, savory, cheesy. my breakfast partner had the chicken sausage. hands down the best sausage i've ever tasted-filled with feta and spinach. my beverage was a dirty chai (chai w/a shot if expresso). amazing. i'd eat here every morning if i didn't travel. oh- and skip the rosemary potatoes, they are good but the potato cakes are heaven.

delicious lunch. i had a most delicious smoked salmon sandwich, very fresh and lots of salad, almost too large a portion. as desert i had the basil smoothie which i was at first skeptical about but had to try. it turned out to be most refreshing and really great taste, not so sweet. certainly to recommend further.
