2 of us popped in for sunday lunch

the food is very nice and the service was very good,

the only reason why i am not giving 5* is because we weren’t told dogs were allowed in the area we were sitting in. today was a wet day, i had 4 large smelly dogs around me whilst we were finishing our food and they stank the place out.

also the website does not say dog friendly.

i remember visiting the bellevue once many years ago, before the ox re-brand and it wasn't really memorable, maybe it was my date or maybe me being a design snob had something to do with it. the interior was outdated and in desperate need of a makeover.

walking in the ox, you are greeted with an industrial interior which seems to be the craze at the moment. they took on the hipster approach when it's comes to branding, something which works and i love! i like that the owners are aware of the power of brand and marketing because it really has paid off so well done guys and the place fits in marvellously with the broughton street charm.

enough about design, let's get to the food! i ordered a large glass of sauvignon blanc to accompany my fish supper. i always order fish and chips when i'm in a pub and i like to compare who cooked it best.

the batter was crispy and the portion size was just right. i would've preferred mushy peas and homemade chunky chips, but that's me just being picky. the staff are very attentive and friendly so extra points for the good customer service. i will definitely visit again and it's useful having a delightful wee pub just round the corner from home.

the ox. apparently, the brainchild of three renegades from leith shore, this reinvented establishment constitutes one of my favourite, if slightly clichéd, type of eateries - a gastro-pub.

went here 1st time on its first week of opening. wow, what a transformation. and the staff are ace. joe, excellent guy and absolutely charming. the bar has excellent choices of spirits and recently stocked on the new arbikie scottish potato vodka. one we also like having with our meals is the mini prosecco bottles. sweet! good to see tim stocking local brands, great support.

the food is excellent. had mackerel as a main instead of the starter. so so fresh and cooked so right, crispy on the top and soft meaty center with just a hint of pink. the ox cheek was divine too. very large cheek braised and juicy, mmmmm.

on new years day we came here for the count down party. what a party! they know how to entertain and keep a party going.

best part is, it is dog friendly. bonus points!

i'd recommend coming here for a good finer pub meal, enjoying the choices of spirits at the bar and bring your dog. try the fish and chips. my sunday favourite!

nothing quite beats a good old sunday roast - it's all you crave on a sunday afternoon, especially when the weather isn't filling you with warmth, so you might as well find it in roasted meat and vegetables. this is, at least, how i felt last sunday. so, seeing as we live in the area and they offer a sunday roast, we thought we'd give the ox a try.

their welcome was warm - even on a busy sunday afternoon we were seen to immediately by the friendly head waitress/manager, who made sure we were happy with the available table and to take our drinks order. the bar was visibly busy, however our drinks came swiftly - a clear demonstration of the excellent organisation from the staff. we both had come for the roasted beef but we thought we'd order a light starter to share, so we went for the hummus and pita bread. again, it came in good time and was delicious.

now - the roast. it comprised of a large slab of beef, roast potatoes, carrots, green beans, a yorkshire pudding and plenty of gravy (very important). the beef was perfectly, cooked - the well seasoned, juicy meat was sealed to perfection, whilst still being pink in the middle. the yorkshire puddings were crispy on the outside and fluffy in the middle, and the gravy was delicious, intense and thick. all the veg was cooked well, however the roast potatoes were fine. overall, it was a very, very good roast - and plenty of food. we were tempted by the dessert menu but we just couldn't face it.

so, if you enjoy a sunday roast, it's certainly worth giving the ox a go. you'll experience excellent service and good food.

went here on a saturday night with a couple of my friends to have some drinks. the atmosphere was great, and it wasn't too busy. the staff were lovely and there were enough on that we never had to wait too long at the bar to get served. the drinks were general edinburgh prices so £4-5 for a bottle of beer but that's expected in such a nice place on broughton street. i'll definitely be going back soon to check out the food menu.
