when it comes to seaside dining in santa monica, the lobster is among the most prominent options, and having heard rave reviews thru both yelp and friends alike, i decided to test my luck at a walk-in on a friday night.
star 1: how was the service and atmosphere?
if you've ever been to santa monica, there's no doubt you've been by the lobster. with it's proximity to the pier and 3rd street, it's seemingly among the most prominent dining options in town, and that's not without reason. overlooking the pacific with two tiers of open-air dining, the lobster is brilliantly situated, and backs up the location with a top of the line fleet of servers (some of which you very well may recognize from commercials). while things can get crazy on the weekends, the lobster pulls it off every time. star granted.
star 2: how were the portions relative to the cost?
not unlike many of my dining experiences in malibu, the lobster is one of those places that you walk into well aware that you're going to shell out some serious green. my visit was no exception, and i opted for both the clam chowder and the lobster ravioli... the damage? $42 without tax and tip... ouch.
it's hard to pass judgement here just because i was well aware that i'd be spending so much, and if there had been any mistakes of periods of comfort i'd withhold this star immediately. however? there weren't. the experience was brilliant, and for that? star granted.
stars 3 and 4: how was the food?
while not quite as good as nearby moonshadows in malibu, my clam chowder was excellent. however, i will say that the lobster ravioli was a bit different than what i expected. while it may be the norm (i can't say i've ever had lobster ravioli before), the dish was soaked in a very rich butter sauce, and as a result, every bite tasted pretty much like standard pasta soaked in butter. again, this could be the norm, but i don't think i would order it again. single star granted.
star 5: would you eat here every day if you could?
few on the planet could afford to go to the lobster on a daily basis, but i'm going to grant the star here simply because a visit to santa monica is truly incomplete until you've dined overlooking the santa monica pier. the best place to do that? the lobster. whether it's once or weekly, you need to come here. star granted.
