way too slow.... i have been to the lizard at prince books four times now and without fail they take a minimum of 15-20 minutes to make a sandwich to go. this time, i went at 1:30pm thinking they might speed up if they weren't dealing with the lunch rush. the food is okay but when you pay $11 for a tuna sandwich and a bottled drink you expect at least a little service to go along with it.

a great place to eat for healthy and still filling food. the register clerk was very polite when i couldn't decide what to order and made suggestions based on what she had tried before. it's always good if the staff has eaten the food and is willing to mention it in detail. i got the mushroom and artichoke sandwich. tasted like a veggie pizza because of the sun-dried tomato sauce and mozzarella bits. so yum for me! i wanted something sweet and was recommended the sweet potatoe biscuits with peach jam. it was warm and only slightly sweet so it wasn't over bearing. to drink i tried the lemon-mint water. very different, but awkwardly refreshing. all in all i really enjoyed my meal.

a total gem that's tucked away in a precious bookstore. the food is fresh, exciting and incredibly delicious. the owner and his sister couldn't have been nicer. i will be making special trips to norfolk just for this place and can't wait to see the special next time. my only complaint is that there aren't more locations so more people could experience the lizard!

probably the best salad in downtown norfolk. to me, the best salads in downtown and possibly all of town, though i'd have to think longer about that. the salad and salad dressing selection is limited (i think they only have the house vinaigrette, but i've never asked about anything else because it's so good). but the greens are bountiful and varied and fresh. i prefer the signature salad which has nuts and smidge of blue cheese to the main st. salad which has feta and more varied vegetables. the soups are wonderful and usually not really heavy. the sweet potato biscuit with smithfield ham and peach preserves is divine if not entirely virtuous. at roughly $8-9 for most lunch items it is a little more than i like to spend at lunch, but never a disappointment. it's probably true that they aren't the speediest, but i've never had to wait too long (though i've never gotten carry out). this is not the place to go for a tuna fish sandwich. go for salad, or soup, or pimento cheese, or something a little less available--though i'm sure they would do tuna salad as well as it could be done.

bill & amy prince, owners. happy new year!
the lizard has reopened with a new chef and lots of new tasty treats!

our menu is very similar to our "sister" leaping lizard cafe in virginia beach, with homemade soups, salads and sandwiches. fresh local ingredients, homemade bread & fresh baked cookies are our signature. everything is sliced, diced and baked daily...we have no freezer!

watch leaping lizard cafe on the food network's "diners, drive-ins & dives"

ask about our catering platters & delivery service

see ya in the new year!

recent visits to the lizard. i went to the lizard for first time couple weeks ago. it was absolutely amazing so i invited two friends from work to go today especially to try the sweet potato biscuit/surry ham/jam special combo. placed our order for 2 waters and unsweet tea and 10 minutes later the blonde waitress (w/o much personality and apparently not loving being there) returned to make sure she had drink order correct and then went to fix drinks. we went to place food order and that is when she told us they were out of sweet potato biscuit special, thus all of us had to view menu again and then wait for order to be taken. took about 40 minutes to get our lunch today and with only an hour for lunch that was pushing it. we enjoyed our lunch but staff just seemed a little disorganized and kitchen was very backed up (when we arrived two tables had ordered and food didn't come for a while and two people were waiting when we got there for take out and it took a long time for them to get their food as well). maybe they should mark the blackboard when they are out of items so it will speed the process of guests placing their orders. thanks for listening.

wow... great place. amazing food. i ended up ordering a 2nd dish so i could take it home for dinner. great fast service in my case. there was 6 other tables and people in line when i came (and it's a small place) this is a reason itself to go to norfolk va

located at 109 e. main street, the lizard is the new cafe in prince books. specializing in "seasonal fare from the local farms of tidal virginia", they offer sandwiches, wraps, salads, soup and dessert daily for lunch. we made our first trip for lunch on

it takes a lot to get me to go to norfolk. why? i don't know. let's forget for a moment that i drive to norfolk everyday for work. but my office is nowhere near downtown and parking is not an issue. i live at the beach and i'm a creature of habit. downtow
