put geopolitical differences aside and just enjoy a damned fine meal at manchester’s consistently impressive the lime tree. as i enter west didsbury’s bustling, family-run lime tree restaurant there seems to be no signs of frugality from either the management who are happily serving generous portions of locally sourced produce nor the abundant customers.

pasta puttanesca – olives, capers, chilli, tomatoes and garlic. the pasta dish was very good… i’d say, better than many specialist italian restaurants in town. a rich, well-seasoned tomato sauce with good plump capers and chunks of olive (it perhaps needed a tad more chilli for my taste.)

across the table my wife was enjoying some very pleasant duck in a nicely balanced orange and cointreau sauce. the accompanying buttered veg was spot on. trying it confirmed to me that i’d ordered badly and that my mediocre course was simply my mistake. it’s worth stressing, however, that this mistake cost £25!**

we've been in manchester for nearly half a year now but i can count on one hand the number of times we've been out for a dinner meal. instead, i've been enjoying the pigpig's home cooking. still it is nice to go out for a nice meal and we were lucky enough for a reader to give us some recommendations. the lime tree took up a cosy little corner in the suburbs of west didsbury. outside was a placard stating that it was the 6th best restaurant in the north west according to the sunday times, high praise indeed. inside was a comfortable looking place and the staff were cheerful so we were very much looking forward to a hearty meal. as we made our reservation just the day before, we started out meal at 6pm and were pleasantly surprised that we weren't the only patrons that early. it turned out that there was an early bird offer (3 courses for £15 or so). " chicken liver parfait with chutney, pickles and toast ". the generous slab of the chicken liver, placed on top of a little pile of dres

star quality. turned up without a booking and surprise, surprise......unlike some other eateries with big reputations...they were friendly, found a table and made this an evening to remember. superb frogs legs, delicious steak and good well-priced wine. great staff who obviously care about their customers.
