the soup of day was tomato and i can report that it was probably the best tomato soup i’ve tasted on my questing adventures, so far

the sausage and mash was delightful. i don’t usually like sausages, but these were meaty and herby and went perfectly with the well judged mash (perhaps a little too dry for my tastes, but when mixed with the gravy and the sausages it was delicious). the onion gravy was everything that i love about french onion soup; soft onions melting away leaving behind a bold beefy aftertaste. mmmmmm.

me and my fiance went there once, while visiting edinburgh on vacation. this restaurant has amazing! great value and just superb food. i would strongly suggest getting the "meat plate". outstanding! had a great experience!

i grew up in quebec (a little town called aylmer, to be precise), and so i have a pretty good idea of what 'a lot' of snow looks like, thanks to my formative first 9 winters spent in this oft-frozen eastern province of canada. i remember learning to skate on double-runnered baby bob-skates, marching up and then skiing down any closed road with a decent incline, and the annual tradition of skating along ottawa's frozen rideau canal whilst munching sweet cinnamon dusted ' beaver tail ' pastries. fast forward

it’s been four years since i was last in this town, and was glad to be received by the similar enchantingly cloudy skies that ruled over the street bagpipers. we had little time in edinburgh, so we decided against the might of the grain store and opted for the stripped down, canteen splendour at the dogs

very good choice.. quirky and inviting dining room. excellent service.

i've been for lunch and dinner and have found that, especially at the prices, the food on offer is exceptional. some of the best puddings around as well.

a must-visit restaurant in edinburgh.

good food; lovely place. we were a bit confused at first, having booked a table at the dogs, we found underdogs and amore dogs and the dogs all next door to each other. but we were in the dogs after all, and it was fabulous.

service was quick without feeling rushed. food - delicious. we had venison liver which was perfectly cooked, and the vegetarian sausages with mash, which were great. puddings - sticky toffee, and lemon & thyme posset. just lovely. all was well-done without being fancy, and the atmosphere was good, relaxed and friendly. prices - for food of this quality, it was a bargain. £46 for 2, 2 courses including wine and coffee.

already looking forward to a return trip.

the food will be delicious, with the occasional major triumph and minor slip, and the atmosphere quirky but friendly. it is a very strong contender for my all time favourite restaurant, and i dare you to find a better chip!
