buns?. excited to try this place. immeditaly impressed with the atmosphere and decor. felt like being in a very hip nyc coffee house. unfortunatly there weren't actually any buns at the bun shop. there were an assortment of phyllo pastries stuffed with various savory ingredients. the filllings were delicious, especially the apple gruyere but we came to have dinner and after two of the very flaky and buttery creations i had a greasy coating on my tongue and a table covered in phyllo bits. we weren't full but couldn't stomach more of the same so went elsewhere to complete our meal. the positive reviews described the bun shop as having a "variety" of breads with different fillings. i would love to come back just enjoy the scene, maybe with more time they will include different textures to their menu, perhaps even buns!

how is it possible that i have yet to visit this endearing coffee shop, errr… for me… a late night spot.  this shop was busy even after midnight on a weeknight.  it’s a little trendy, and full of young adults and local students. the bun shop is a little off the beaten path in mount vernon, but with plenty of parking, it is definitely worth a stop and i will always pick this spot of milk and honey, as they seem perfectly able to prepare your food and your coffee in less than 35 minutes.

i don’t find myself in mount vernon nearly as often as i’d like. there are so many cute coffee shops serving delicious food that i’m missing out on. on a recent saturday, a friend and i explored graffiti alley in station north and on the way back to my apartment we were both a little hungry. because it was mid-afternoon, we were in the mood for something small to hold us over until dinner. i remembered hearing about the bun shop which specializes in sweet and savory pastries from all over the world as well as vietnamese coffee. this sounded like the perfect spot for our midday snack and we headed over. the bun shop when we walked in, we were greeted with a pastry case that displayed the buns of the day. they all looked awesome. my friend opted for a savory bun and ordered the chicken pasty. this was a brittish bun, served warm, filled with shredded chicken, potatoes, peas, and carrots in a celery cream sauce. i’ve never had a pasty before so i wasn’t exactly sure what to expect but it was awesome. it was similar to a handheld chicken pot pie.   chicken pasty inside chicken pasty i was in the mood for something sweet so i ordered the rotiboy, which was the only sweet pastry the bun shop was offering when we visited. the rotiboy was a malaysian sweet & salty roll with an espresso vanilla shell. the only way i could describe this dish to my friend was that it tasted like a warm hug. it was incredibly comforting, the bun was soft and only slightly salty with plenty of vanilla flavor throughout. but the best part was the warm center which had a little bit of melted butter. rotiboy everything was simply outstanding at the bun shop , i can’t wait to return and try some more of their buns from all over the world.

cheese and guava flute. crust was amazingly flaky and light. i love fruit and cheese and i love guava- so finding a tasty treat with one of my more difficult to come by favorite fruits was so exciting! i cannot wait to come back and eat it again.

super chill atmosphere. lots of students come here to study, and other than the alt music, the huge space is pretty quiet/calm, and has a good amount of privacy for a coffee shop. the food's pricier than it could be (coming from a college kid) but a solid rotation of sweet and savory foods. also their iced teas are very flavorful

bun bummer. no buns at all when we went. mediocre ingredients poorly wrapped in pastry dough and extremely overcooked. we got the curry puff and the panamanian empanada. the curry puff was so overcooked the sides were inedible. empanada was like taco bell - no offense to taco bell, i just wouldn't pay 3 bucks for an empanada there.
the brewed iced coffee was great and the atmosphere was nice. lots of potential, just lacking on their prime directive right now..
