this rating is for only scone.  i won't give any point for coffee ( mocha)  and service at all.
a tall lady made a horrible mocha that didn't have any coffee taste as just a hot chocolate.  i asked single shot or double shot, then she answered " double".   i didn't think so. i drink mocha nearly everyday and i used to make espresso coffee at cafe after finished otago poly.  when i said " no coffee taste"  and she excused " because takeaway cup is big ( as regular size)"  so her mean not her fault it's our cup size fault....   ok...   so i asked very politely to make another mocha but still she said we have same size takeaway cup.  then i suggested "you can pour less quantity of milk after coffee.  i believed she can use brain, but she didn't. she made worse mocha at this time. it was sweeter, still no coffee taste and poor milk froth that likes runny choco drink.  dear  dear.   i ordered 'takeaway coffee" but she didn't tell me when coffee was ready to go. my mocha and scone were sitting on the counter for a while.  hello??? 
poor service, no hospitality skill.   other staff may make a good coffee, coz one of my friend said a lady ( not tall lady ) makes good coffee when i told everyone about this horrible coffee story at work on that day.     i can tell everybody don't let her make your coffee.   her coffee made my day bad, do you understand?  they should know or/and think about why people want to buy coffee.   a coffee is  important because that will  influence your day.

i have never done this before, but after being recommended this place so many times, thought i should finally try it before i judged it. i now feel i need to let people know how crap it was. it was revolting. i had eggs bene, but wanted vegetarian (no bacon), which became a 15 min discussion from staff to work out if this was possible (hmmm, maybe just don't serve it with the bacon??) and my partner got eggs bene, with the bacon, and a side of mushrooms. when the meals came our we were shocked. each plate had not 2 halves of english muffins under the eggs etc, but 5 halves! wtf? it was massive! to top it off, the muffins were all soggy from poaching water and mushroom juice. one of my eggs was edible, the other was just the white, with no yolk. probably still floating in the pot somewhere? not surprisingly, we left. plates full, didn't ask for a refund, didn't see the point.

had garlic prawn for an entree, it could have been a main it was huge, the blue cod was amazing, 2 beers a jack daniels coffee prawns and blue cod 70 bucks unreal value awesome team the young lady who served me showed a passion for the industry, thanks guys i'm well happy

beautiful food!!! really well priced with good value for money. the portions were exactly what you wanted, without having to pay ridiculous amounts of money. personal recommendation would be the seafood chowder and the bacon and mushroom pasta

friendly service and awesome burgers...corn fritters are to die for! good place for small or big gatherings as the food is relatively cheap. dark lighting can seem a little gloomy and tends to make you sleepy. but that's probably just the atmosphere.

good service from staff. come here many times. thoroughly enjoy their burgers, chips and pancakes! usually come during the day so not too busy at all.

i love this place. it is a bit expensive but the quality of the food is great. the restaurant provides variety kind of food to choose from such as steak, chicken parmigiana, beef schnitzel, burger, soup and salad. good test of western food really. staff are also friendly and the restaurant atmosphere is cosy. i definitely recommend this restaurant.

had the pleasure of dining here for brunch this morning with a friend, after attending fleetwood mac last night, was heading for excelsior but had 1hr wait so popped into black dog on off chance & have to say it was our gain. awesome all day breakfast( it'll keep you going all day) all food was fresh, tasty & piping hot, the coffee's we had (bowl mocha & latte) were fantastic. friendly staff & a great atmosphere for our visit, oh & the muffins, as well as being huge are delicious, if i'd known they were that good i'd have grabbed two for trip back to chch lol.
keep it up guys, a top visit & i'll be sure to head back next time in dunedin.

on saturday 20/02/2015 i went to this restaurant with the intention of celebrating a lovely 21st for my cousin whom had organised a celebratory dinner for 30 people in the end only 16 people arrived. the lovely waitress did nothing but provide exceptional service to our party and as we were about to order our meal co manager len rudely interrupted by demanding where and when the rest of the guest were. dumbfounded by his verbal attack he publically humiliated myself and the rest of the party and demanded us to leave the restaurant. never in my life have i ever experienced such embarrassment from anyone. i am highly disappointed in this restaurant and would not recommend it as a place to dine.

i have heard of the wonderful reviews about the food provided at this restaurant by local regulars. a place i couldn't wait to see what all the fantastic fuss was about. 
however after hearing of the disgusting poor customer experience provided by manager len i certainly will not be placing my money here or recommending this joint to anyone.  on saturday 21st feb 2015 my brother pre booked for 30 people to celebrate his 21st birthday dinner.  unfortunately only 21 managed to attend the event.  not only did len humiliate one of your customers & his guests he did so in the public eye causing great embarrassment. he unprofessionally handled the matter by rudely telling them to "get out of here!" and made a public fuss about having to turn other customers away from the restaurant in order cater to this party.  he displayed frustration and arrogance due to numbers not being met. there was no public misconduct done by the any of the group and no request was made by them for len to turn customers away. len's arrogant actions and poor business judgment then caused high levels of distress to the 21 people who were mistreated and had to find somewhere to celebrate. i am glad they put their money into another venue...business you simply do not deserve.
 

if len is unable to handle the fluctuations of the hospitality industry or unable to provide decent customer service then perhaps training in these areas would assist. its quite shocking to hear that he is co manager/owner because i certainly would not be working for such a rude arrogant person.  

might i also add that my brother is profoundly deaf so to humiliate one who can not hear his behavior must have been absolutely outrageous.

i myself am a kiwi situated in australia working in the customer service industry and through word of mouth your business has reached me and i do not recommend this place and will be telling many others both in nz and australia

they do amazing muffins! especially the savoury ones. they can be a bit particular about eating in the cafe if you say takeaway but other than that they are pretty good.

just spent 3 days in dunedin with 3 friends for id fashion week and each day went to the black dog for a meal and drink. wonderful food! great value. devine lasagna, thai beef salad, coffee, etc. tried to adopt the chef! great service and a cosy atmosphere of whatever you want it to be - restaurant or café. definitely recommend.

as a customer who has visited black dog in no less than 40 occasions over the past four years, i must say that their food and drinks have never disappointed me. it is easily one of the best cafes in town, and you won't find a better place for a sunday morning brunch. they have quality coffee, a variety of cold and hot food, and a really warm and classy atmosphere. i particularly recommend their beef burger, seafood chowder, and savoury muffin.
