i’m really lucky because i got to escape what is hopefully the worst of this chicago winter yet again by spending my time in naples, florida. one of my favorite restaurants so far is the bay house restaurant , which is hidden away in the mangroves on the cocohatchee river. we started out sitting outside, where you have a sweeping view of the river and the birds catching fish from the river.

as we sat waiting for our lunch, our server brought over their famous fluffy bread with a dish of soft butter. we slathered that butter onto those warm buns and were immediately content. by the time our appetizer arrived, we had to ask for more (good thing we were blind to how many calories each of these buns actually were).

...grapefruit was sliced in half and the segments were loosened with a pairing knife for ease of eating. the grapefruit was topped with a hard sugar crust, crumbled pistachios, and mint. it was perfection and definitely the highlight of the meal.

bad night at bay house. i had been here 3 years ago and recalled it being loud , expensive with mediocre food. now someone said there was new management so we decided to take another chence....bad decision!!! sadly, nothing had changed: the prices were now even more off the charts, so we decided to go "easy". three of us had a glass each of a cheap chardannay @ $10.95 per glass....a bottle of this brand costs $11.00 in the supermarket!! we each had entres @ $30 each(some entres on the menu were close to $50). our bill with tip was just under $200!! you might expect to pay in this range at gormet upscale establishments, but not here. our portions were meager filling less than half the plate, but perhaps that was a blessing for what there was of it was dreadful!! my portion of grouper was truly deminutive and its surface, toughened by overcooking. the latter had to be peeled away to get at the edible(just barely) portion. truly there was very little fish left to eat. the accompanying small bit of roasted potatoes mixed with a few baby(rock) shrimp were as unappetizing as the grouper. my dining mates were equally displeased with their fare.

all in all, the bay house served poorly prepared food at totally rip off prices and i would never return here and would certainly advise others to do the same!!

nice ambiance, so so food, terrible service. we are foodies and live full time in sw florida. if i had to list the top 100 restaurants in the area, the bay house would not even make the list. pros: beautiful water views from inside and outside the restaurant. i ate here with a group a few years ago and found the food to be average at best. today, i decided to to have a romantic lunch and what a disaster. it took our waiter 10 minutes to acknowledge us and i did notice many other tables were going unnoticed. after finally taking our order, we patiently waited 30 minutes for the food to come. during that time, our waiter was shaking a martini for the table next to us, and poured the lid and all the ice all over the adjoining table. we asked him where our food was, and he replied that he forgot to put the order in. so, we high tailed out of there, never to return. to me a dining experience is a complete experience; food, ambiance, and service. this hits on one and fails on the other two. if you like a tourist tap with a view, then this is what you will get.

nice view, delicious food. pleasant setting, with a nice river view. different menu with a decidedly southern twist. the fried green tomato salad wasn't a salad, just two fried tomatoes, a little too sweet for my taste with the tomato jam all over. the shrimp cocktail was outstanding, some of the freshest and sweetest shrimp i've ever had. the pan roast with tile fish was delicious, with distinct favors of the components allowed to shine.

awful. the lobster and crab hot pot was truly awful. although it had an appealing pastry crust, beneath was a sea of white sauce containg semi to uncooked onions, which i can stll taste today even though i left most of them. there was no discernable lobster, and the only suspicion that there might perhaps have been some crab was by the texture.

we enjoy trendy and therefore sometimes somewhat noisy restaurants. this one took the biscuit, it being so noisy that one could hardly carry on a conversation.
