none. i went last summer and tried to 45 minutes to get a table with my mom in a wheelchair. i am far from young and spry but was told i had to beat other people to a table to be seated and that the wait was about 15 minutes. we never got seated, i finally asked for food to go and was told it was up to the waiter who refused. we never got to eat there and i really got the impression we were not wanted there. very rude people, at the least.

the back abbey burger might be in the top 1% of burgers served in the 48 contiguous states. 25 craft beers on tap, fries in classic paper cones, and the service was as competent and attentive as was the skill of the kitchen staff.

i began a few searches for good burgers and beer within the area. all my searches pointed to the back abbey. after paying a visit for lunch, i can definitely see why this gastropub would be mentioned because the burgers and beers are excellent in both selection and taste.

before choosing a burger or burgers from the menu, i went over the appetizers for a small starter but couldn't stop eyeing the mussels. the crab cakes were another to catch my attention but in the end, the mussels and a kwak beer won. i really enjoyed these mussels. aside from their delicious taste, they were prepared in a flavorful butter/lemon/white wine sauce that i couldn't stop eating. i literally began dipping other food items into the sauce including my fries. i wanted to eat the rest as a soup but realized i had two burgers to take down so settled with just using the remaining sauce as a dip. great stuff!

the two burgers i ordered were the back abbey and the backyard burger. lots of flavorful juice and spices came from both the dry-aged patties. the back abbey burger was like a kaleidoscope of flavors. you got the sharp from the aged gouda, the sweet from the caramelized onions, the zest from the mustard aioli, and the savory from both the bacon and patty. each mixed perfectly to make one awesome taste. the backyard burger was more of their take on a classic cheese burger and though it had nothing out of the ordinary going on with it, this burger was great. the veggies were crisp and the 1 year aged cheddar was perfect with the red remy sauce.

let me not forget to mention the duck fat fries that were good as well. as i stated earlier, i began dipping these fries into the sauce the mussels were prepared in but not before dipping into the horseradish chive sauce that came with the fries. this was horseradish done right. you got the taste of the horseradish without the burn from eating to much at a time. very creamy as well. i also like the green salads that accompanied the burgers. i may not talk about salads much but i'm a fan especially when they're light on the vinaigrette.

great burgers, mussels and ice cold beers. this made one epic birthday lunch. the service is top notch as well. not only did my server check to see if anything was needed often, so did other servers that just so happen to be passing while carrying smiles and conversations here and there.

the back abbey is a great place to grab food and beers. i'm looking forward to checking out this place on a weekend night. i had a great time and if this afternoon visit is any indication, visiting on a weekend night will be a blast.

it's a lively gastropub and very loud in the evening. six of us sat at the communal table inside. it's quieter on the outdoor patio. our server aj was great and our drinks were good. my husband enjoyed an oktoberfest zwick 'l kellerbeir in a big stein. we also ordered a bavarian pretzel with a plain aioli with mustard seeds to start the evening dining adventure.

here's what else we ordered:

1. a ploughman - an assortment of meat, cheese, pickled veggies, sliced apples and half a baguette. for $25 i thought that was a high price for this platter and the baguette was too hard and cold. if it was warm and softer, i would have been happier.

2. the grilled vegetable burger had grilled red bell peppers, portabello mushroom, eggplant, and zucchini, that was layered with feta cheese. it was served on a brioche bun with an average side salad for $12.

3. the backyard burger is a dry-aged ground beef with cheese burger. on top of the patty were red onions, tomatoes and lettuce. it was descent, but nothing that wow'd us. it's served with a plain side salad for $13.

4. the soup of the day was a creamy potato with cheese and half a sliced baguette. dipping the hard bread into the soup did soften it a little. it was $7.

5. the bratwurst sausage sandwich with onions and peppers was average. it arrived with a mustard sauce for $10.

6. our one friend did enjoy his glass of blanche de bruxelles for $8.

7. my $10 glass of rose' was good, but for a college town and gastropub, again on the high side in cost.

our bill with tip was $150.

since it's near a movie theater i think it attracts movie goers before or after a movie, locals and parents of college kids at the claremont colleges wanting a step up from dorm food.

a good place to hang and have a good drink(s)! great selection of beers and duck fat fries ❤️!! price is a little bit above average but it is worth it! its a little hard to nail down the servers during busy hours, pretty much had to stalk them or i wont get any food... i would recommend this place to all my friends. especially those who love and understand beers!

pretentious beard guy. they don't allow substitutions with the menu. the wait staff are generally very kind about this fact. there is a chef however that is pretentious enough to warrant this review. if you have dietary restrictions or hate pretentious beard guys this restaurant is not for you.

good, but i need more in my glass. interesting place with good atmosphere. i showed up too late to get food and i get the feeling the kitchen closes far too early. the do have a beer selection unlike any other bar i have ever seen, big plus there.

sadly, the half full beer glass for the price of a full glass leaves me undecided if i will be back at the back abbey any time soon

the burgers are good, the fries are an authentic belgian touch. also, note that each beer comes in it's own brand glass, just like the many pubs in belgium. great place to hang out when you can sit outside.

the burger may be good but the beer pour stinks!. this maybe voted best burger in the i.e. but don't expect a full pour in your beer glass despite a $9 per glass price! pomme frittes are great...but where's the mayo? in these economic times...fill my glass for heavens sake!
