i had a one hour gap between two lectures and decided to go for breakfast with my mate. tastebud is literally a 3 minute walk from campus so it seemed convenient and quick. i've learnt quickly that stellenbosch functions on african time and this has become clear on the visits i have made to numerous cafés in town. tastebud was no different. it was relatively quiet for once so we didn't have to wait for a table which was a nice change. i've been to tastebud before where it's been absolutely packed. i've tried the harvest table and also ordered lunch from the menu. i haven't been disappointed with the food so far!
on friday, we were immediately approached and asked what we wanted to drink. their cappuccinos are good which for me is a big achievement. but unfortunately the cup was not big enough to last me the amount of time it took our breakfast to arrive. we waited over 20 minutes and it wasn't even full and on any other day i wouldn't have been too fussed but we had a lecture to get to.
mine came first, but they had made a mistake with my order and it had to be sent back. after another 5 minutes, the two meals we actually ordered came through. i must say it was all beautifully presented and smelt delicious. i had just enough time to snap a photo before we dug in! i had the vineyard breakfast which included two perfectly fluffy scrambled eggs, juicy mushrooms, plump roasted baby tomatoes and potato and corn fritters. all this an a slice of seeded toast. i wish i had more time to savour it and eat it slower than i did but i would really love to go back and have it again when i can do just that!! despite the mix up with my order and the slow service, the food is really good, the staff are friendly and the whole environment feels laid-back and welcoming. my advise: treat your tastebuds and given them a visit!
