one of my family's all time favorites, this place never disappoints. part of the success is sam who is there everyday overseeing that only the freshest sushi is served. i suggest the omikase which are 8 pieces of the chef's recommendations for the day. they also have unique sushi like sam's special and chili dog.

a friend first introduced me to sushi sam's about 6 years ago.  during that trip, he instructed me on the proper way to go to sushi sam's: always just order the omakase.  perhaps start with some seaweed salad or edamame if you are really hungry.  bonus points for sitting at the bar, and going on tuesday or thursday (when they get the most fresh fish in from japan). the omakase has at times included a random cooked appetizer, but i haven't seen them do that in a while.

i've had the pleasure of going to some good sushi restaurants in north america and sushi sam in san mateo is one of them. in total i have been here three times now. the first time it absolutely blew me away. what were my impressions the next two times? it just reaffirmed my belief that this is one of the best sushi restaurants not in japan. located approximately 30 minutes away from san francisco, the restaurant appears unassuming from the outside. we went this time on a friday afternoon for lunch and it was packed. as always, we sat at the sushi bar so that we could see how the chef works. throughout the lunch you could tell that he was meticulous in his preparation and his hands were very quick. he was always on the go, preparing nigiri after nigiri. we ordered the omikase to test the freshness of the fish. let's just say

disappointing meal!. we decided to try sushi sam's after reading the reviews on urbanspoon....and we are really sorry we did. we should have turned around and left right away when we walked in and the place smelled like urine. everything we ordered was disappointing, from the cold edamame to the overly sweet and deep fried spider roll. our sashimi was low grade and the green salad was simply iceburg lettuce with a few carrots and cucumbers. do not try this restaurant if you value a good meal for your money!

great japanese food. we asked our server to have the chef pick several courses of sushi and sashimi for our group. the selections were interesting with diverse tastes and were well timed. i'm planning to eat here next time i'm in the bay area.

i did not like the food. the salad that comes with the bbq beef had no flavor, and the beef was too salty. rice was hard. i would not go back again. it is not worth your money .

sushi sam's is a popular japanese restaurant in downtown san mateo. we have considered them and hotaru as the 2 best japanese restaurants in this area. decor, vibe - small cramped space with generic japanese restaurant decor. many people waiting, tables f

sushi sam's is one of the few places that caters to the black diamond sushi addicts (uni, kohada, spanish mackerel) as well as to the green circle (makis) and blue square sushi eaters (tuna, yellowtail). at first glance, visitors from japan scoffed at the
