had a really good meal this past weekend.  i had the crab cake as an appetizer.  it was devine!  i highly recommend the crab cake.  i also ordered the stuffed crab and stuffed potato.  the stuffed crab was okay; the stuffed potato was delicious.  my husband had the grilled stuffed tilapia and sweet potato.  the stuffed tilapia was huge, but a little on the dry side; the sweet potato was baked perfectly.  staff was very attentive and friendly.  the owner walked to each table to check on the patrons.  i really like this place and will go again.  i'll just keep trying different things until i find the perfect combination for my meal.  fyi:  we went at 7:00 p.m. on a friday night and there was quite a line.  fortunately we had reservations, but even with the reservations, we were told we would have a 20 minute wait and it did not matter that we had reservations.  fortunately some people got up just then and so we did not have to wait 20 minutes.  it appears that the owners are a little overwhelmed with their success but it is clear that they want to give their diners a great experience.

we made the 30 minute drive to saint martinville to see if the things we had heard about the saint john were true.
the building is a restored pecan cracking warehouse. it scores big points on ambience. the staff was very friendly; even had the owner wandering around greeting patrons.
the rolls brought first were great , warm and just right. the house dressing, a spicy ranch was good on the dinner salad - just iceberg lettuce one tomato slice and one cucumber slice.
i had the crab cakes everyone raves about. they were good but i thought needed more seasoning. so not the best i ever had but definitely better than your average fair.
the crab dinner’s crab fingers, stuffed crab and crabmeat augratin were very good but the etoufee missed the mark.
the shrimp pasta was very good as well with a large amount of shrimp; not like some places when you have to search for the shrimp amongst the pasta.
all in all a great evening - i recommend making the drive and go early to see the evangeline oak.

a few months ago, i was asked to cover a restaurant for a local magazine that i write for. the restaurant was st. john which is located in st. martinville, louisiana. the name st. john comes from a popular street in the st. martinville area. a family owned business that is located on bayou teche. st. john restaurant is a casual dining atmosphere that is serving up creole and cajun food.  the menu offers a variety of options from seafood to steaks.  in addition, offering healthy options for the health-conscience; items like grilled seafood and salads.

st. john's is the kind of place you take a friend on their first trip to louisiana. the sites around st. martinville are true to the heart of cajun country and the food at st. john's is on par ,if not above, to that of grandma burleigh. a true gem and now st. john's is on the bayou teche.

just had an absolutely wonderful meal at the st. john restaurant to celebrate our 45th anniversary.  my husband had the swamp platter (frog legs, catfish and alligator).  he said it was out of this world.  i had the eggplant de teche.  eggplant covered with a creamy crab sauce.  it was fabulous.  the staff was so friendly and helpful. will certainly return.

dined there yesterday with friends and the food was fantastic!  i had the grilled shrimp and grilled vegetables from the lunch menu.  great service and noisy atmosphere, but i like it noisy!  i am originally from new orleans, so i consider myself quite the restaurant critic!  ambiance was charming and friendly!  made me miss home with the hometown feeling!  obviously, the locals know this gem of a restaurant!  lose half a star for paper napkins.....with a truly great dining experience,  i like cloth napkins.....for me, it is a touch of class and distinction from your average restaurant or cafe.  everything else was just perfect!  will be coming back soon!

quaint restaurant, good food, friendly service. nice little cafe. very few tables, but they will be moving into a bigger space soon. the food is simple cajun food. good but not going to blow you away. i had the eggplant on the teche- fried eggplant with creamy crab meat topping and the sauce had separated. not good. the eggplant was fried perfectly though. and their seafood gumbo was good. not the best, but good.
