delicious and fresh food! although we had to wait in line for about 15 minutes before we could order, we got our food quickly after we ordered. the restaurant is small but comfortable, and there is patio seating available. my friend and i really enjoyed the food and we were completely satisfied when we were done. we shared the french toast and the famous damus sandwich. i was happy that we shared both items to balance the salty sandwich and the sweet french toast. although i really wanted to try a juice or a coffee, my friend and i found the prices to be too expensive, so we settled for water.

we watched the open kitchen as we waited in the very long line (worth it!) but got a chance to see that everything is made with incredible attention to detail and with so much love. this is not your average avocado toast joint... every last bite is perfectly seasoned, balanced and they nail everything from textures to colors, sweet and savory. amazingly impressive for a tiny kitchen, or any kitchen... big kitchens, you now have zero excuse. worth the shlep from the west side! the only fail (i’d knock it back half a star) was the tiny tables for the big food... but three of us also ordered just about everything so i’ll forgive it.

we had hard a lot about the ricotta toast so had to give it a go.we had already planned our lunch so we just got the ricotta toast but all things that this place had to offer looked really good.

though it sounds so simple with some ricotta and jam on a toast but it was surely a pleasant surprise.

the ricotta was so creamy and smooth and the jam was just right , not to sweet not to tart.

this is how i am going to have toast from now on.

last visited in march of 2013, prices lower, the menu as well as the floorplan approximately half and chef jessica koslow’s name virtually unknown, it should go without saying that much has changed at silver lake’s sqirl over the four years intervening, her enormously-popular restaurant built on burnt bread topped in ricotta and jam now embodying everything that is “california cuisine” at the moment with a menu that is simple, light, fresh and pristine.

originally launched as a simple project focused on healthy, organic ingredients served honestly, chef koslow’s award-winning cookbook “everything i want to eat” beautifully expressing the restaurant’s idea of providing the sort of food one can eat every day without growing bored, jaded or obese, it was just minutes past the restaurant’s 8:00am friday opening that two diners approached a brief line not-infrequently stretching around the block on weekends or during peak hours, patrons ranging from two-year olds to septuagenarians, several races also accounted for though there is no doubt that middle-to-upper class caucasians prone to reading poetry or their own journal in public dominate the scene.

now featuring both an early and afternoon menu scrawled across chalkboards, the website updated daily to detail specials and seasonally to highlight new ideas, it is after a slow march through the line that patrons are brought face-to-face with twenty-somethings manning a register flanked by several unique pastries that require a bit of quick decision making, each order recited back before customers are handed a marker bearing fruit, the packed-space and outdoor patio often seeing runners circle the room twice before locating diners as items are sent out individually as the kitchen staff deems them ready.

having only previously tasted a slice of toast and jam plus coffee from portland’s heart roasters, this visit a far more encompassing experience that should serve as a lesson to chefs everywhere that given the right mindset, location and market no idea is too simple to become a sensation, breakfast at sqirl began with a thick slice of ginger molasses loaf that at first comes across almost *too* intense before dissipating into a subtle burn with a fruity finish, the blood orange kouign amann another abrupt flavor with a mild bitterness amidst all the butter and an overall flavor that favors ‘fresh’ over ‘sweet.’

continuing to show a great eye for balance with the “famed ricotta toast,” a light bit of char on the brioche playing brilliantly off flakes of sea salt, creamy cheese and raspberry-vanilla jam, it was actually by accident that the “brown rice porridge” was ordered instead of the “long cooked chicken rice porridge,” the shallow bowl filled with soft organic grains not dissimilar to traditional oatmeal in terms of texture with housemade almond milk, toasted hazelnuts and jam that seemed to be strawberry with a few sliced sections of whole vanilla beans.

attempting to decide between the sorrel pesto rice bowl or crispy rice salad, the former offered even during the restaurant’s earliest days while the latter has been said by many to be koslow’s best dish, it was with french toast and a buckwheat pancake left to the future that a bowl of crispy kokuho brown rice tinged in mint, acid and ginger arrived with chopped sausage and a sunny-side egg, the flavors at first seemingly a mish-mash but then coming together in harmony to present the sort of dish one really cannot help but keep eating, a re-heated malva cake arriving with just a few bites left not dissimilar to sticky toffee pudding with dark-brown outside flavored by stone fruit wrapped around a nearly-molten custard center.

i absolutely loved this place. came here for breakfast with my friend and we managed to get a table out on the patio. i ordered a coffee, which came in an adorable carafe and with a little mug. the coffee tasted fresh and had a deep, rich flavour. i also ordered the chickpea curry which came with eggs, greens and a side of a long baguette.

the eggs were fresh and perky and the curry was very well seasoned and had a rich, slightly spicy flavour to them. the greens were also phenomenal, salted perfectly, i enjoyed eating them very much. the baguette was buttered and toasted perfectly, it was great for dipping in my eggs and curry. i was a bit worried that i would still be hungry, but i felt so full afterwards, the portion they give is more than enough. it was such a wonderful alternative to the traditional breakfasts i've had in the past. great experience!

not only was everything we ordered good, it was delicious! the hype is real – sqirl has made it on my best brunch list. (vegan friendly).

the i-like-to-be-wrapped-up-in-all-the-details version:
i was a little skeptical of trying sqirl because even though it has been on my radar for over a year, it’s not super close to my house. i’ll give you a bit of background, my family enjoys their sleep and cozy weekend mornings. therefore, getting everyone out of the house especially somewhere that isn’t right down the street can prove a little difficult. however, i took advantage of our early plans to see the floats from the rose parade in pasadena and chose sqirl as a great on-the-way restaurant. it took a little convincing especially when they drove up and saw the line (probably 15 deep around noon on a saturday), but i assured them that we were lucky since i have frequently heard about around-the-block lines. side note: after we got there the line kept getting longer. there is no line that forms inside (space is limited) therefore if you drive by, keep in mind that what you see is what it is. you line up, order, take your number and find a seat (they will bring your food to you). please be courteous and don’t sit down before you have ordered. things move quickly and everyone does find a seat shortly after ordering so just don’t make it difficult for those who are already waiting on their food to find a seat. since we were 5, we took the first available seats at the counter. while a table would’ve been a little cozier and easier to chat, the counter was just fine. our food came relatively quickly and with the amount of people and the chaos of waiting and ordering, the staff was in great spirits and very helpful.

sqirl is another restaurant that follows a…foodie evolutionary chain, if you will. from cooking school to food truck. food truck to small niche counter service. small nice counter service to big deal counter service (see philipe’s) and on to finer and finer levels of fine dining. this is the world we live in now. just eat in it.

foodies live and dive for places like this. small environs. meant for the neighborhood. inexpensive menu. walking in, it really reminded me of dune in atwater village. same kind of thing. same kind of dining experience.

totally different menu, but same kind of thing.

awesome coffee drinks and food. not your normal breakfast food, don't expect omelets and the like. long lines at prime times so plan for that. if you go early between 8:30-9a it's not bad during the week. you can also skip the line and go to the front if you just want a coffee drink to go. pesto rice bowl with an extra egg is my go to breakfast. you can also get it salad style with kale instead of rice for something a little lighter. good veggie and vegan options.

when a place is known for its jams, jam is a frequent ingredient. this sticky, spongy, caramelized delight is concocted with housemade apricot jam. imagine if the outside part of the best caramel corn was made into a tea cake hinting at a secret ingredient. this is it. it is great. i think you’ll have to go to south africa to find anything similar. ask for it to be warmed up, and get a coffee too.

sqirl looks pretty banged up from the outside. you wouldn't know how good it is unless you read a review or heard about it somewhere. we had the sorrel pesto rice and crispy rice salad. both were excellent!

the dish that makes me want to go back for more: avocado toast and ricotta toast with strawberry jam! the line can get super long and parking is sometimes hard to find, but i usually try and stop by during an "off" hour!
