barbq - showdown. being a barbq fan, after moving to charlotte and hearing all the hoopla about nc (eastern vs. western & sc) barbq i decided to head to lexington (nc bbq capitol) to conduct a test. i visited 3 joints: lexington, speedy's & barbecue center. each one is good in it's own way and the people working in all 3 very friendly. the spicy vinergary sauce takes some getting use to, but i like it. the red (barbq) coleslaw is odd (except in nc) and kinds grows on ya - having hush puppies as a common side dish is kinda kool. after going to each restaurant and ordering the same (pork sandwich) item for comparison my conclusion is that speedy's has the best bbq and provided a much larger portion of meat per sandwich. however, it is also my conclusion (after living in nc for almost 3 years) that nc bbq is not on the same level as texas, kansas city, or memphis by any stretch of the imagination, actually tn & ky rate much higher than nc bbq. none the less, nc folks love their type(s) of bbq, and that's all that matters ( ;

some of the best bbq the meat have a superb smokey flavor, sauce is vinegar based with a touch of spice. awesome!

best bbq in north carolina period. chunk pork and skins are fantastic. their french fries are terrific. and don't forget a b & g pie on the way out. did i mention it was the best...

best lexington bbq. we love speedy's - the food, the service, and the prices. all of the food is superb, but the bbq is in our opinion, the best in lexington! it is warm, moist, and flavorful with the mild smoky flavor we crave. portions are generous. we absolutely love the chili cheese fries and the hot dogs. their hamburgers are worthy of mentioning, carolina style with chili and slaw. we order them "all the way" with onions and mustard. yum! we use the curb service often, but we also enjoy eating inside. the dining room is small, but not stuffy. your glass is always full, and the service is fast. the waitresses are always kind, especially to children and old folks. we highly recommend speedy's and our entire family prefers them over lexington bbq.

stick with the pork here. this is my second favorite of the lexington area bbq joints - behind only lexington #1 - as to the pork bbq, itself. the fries are barely passable, the slaw is the red kind that seems to have an agenda of its own, and the hush puppies are average. but the pork is excellent, cooked well, and sauced well - here the tray is my pork of choice.

their hot dog is not memorable, and that's about as far down the menu as i've gone. friendly service, kitchen is not in sprint cup contention, but waiting for good bbq has never been a waste of time.

by no means would i say this is life changing bbq, but this is a sandwich about balance between the components and subtle differences
