worth the trip from center city if you are looking for a real philly sports bar experience away from center city, are visiting the italian market or are being touristy with cheesesteaks. south philly bar & grill is all about location, you guessed it: south philadelphia, next to the famous geno’s and pat’s cheesesteak palaces. spbg is the quintessential philadelphia sports bar and a great place to watch any philly game with some of the most devoted fans anywhere. the area is swarming with tourists so beware. one of bartaste’s top 10 places to watch the phillies.

i love this place!!!!. seriously, this place is as close to perfect as they come! the food is amazing, it's fresh and real, made by a chef, not some frozen box of junk! the staff is always super friendly and there are tv's to watch the game, like all over the place! it's the perfect place to go to eat great food, get cool drink specials and watch a game. it's not what you'd expect--really! it's worth a try. you'll want to keep coming back!

good food, great place. not being very familiar with south philadelphia i found myself here after giving up on the lines outside of pat's and gino's... it's not that i was in the mood for a cheesesteak in particular, i was just hungry as hell. luckily there was spb&g right there! i wasn't really expecting anything more than your regular bar fare but i was pleasantly surprised with the menu and not to mention the beer selection. i decided on the italian pulled pork sandwich and left not a crumb on my plate. very delicious. my thirst was quenched with a tasty lager, served by a friendly and cute lady bartender.

even better, something like 8 hd lcd tv's lining the walls and a large projection screen in the back. i can definitely see myself here during football season... that is if they happen to have the nfl ticket (wink wink, nudge nudge...)

they even have a sliding door! freakin' awesome!

good drink specials and big tvs. the south philly bar and grill is a great place to watch the big game, and they generally have some sort of drink special during the games, they sometimes even have a free food buffet during big games.

the bartenders are always very nice and outgoing, although some of them are new and you may have to explain how to make your drink of choice.

the vegetarian options are very slim, they do have a portabella sandwich, but i generally steer clear of it and either get a salad or make sure not to go there hungry.

best new spot. i was headed to pat's for a steak before heading to my friends house to watch the flyers game. while waiting in the typical pat's line around the block, i noticed a crowd outside of what used to be sam's clams and anastasi's. rather than enduring that line from hell at pat's, i decided to venture across the street to see what all the commotion was about. i walked into what i later found out was called the south philly bar and grill and was pleasantly surprized.
the second i walked in the doors i was greeted by a friendly server standing by the hostess station. he asked me if i would like a table or to just sit at the bar, and since i was by myself i chose the bar. as i surveyed the bar for an empty seat i couldn't help but notice that any seat i found had a great view of at least 4 giant hd tv's and a huge movie screen on the back wall. the bartender quickly greeted me with a smile and offered me a menu and a beverage. since before this i was just planning on grabbing a quick steak, i decided to have one of their specialty drinks that i think was called "philly tap water." i also asked the bartender what i could quickly grab to eat that was good and she recommended what she called their exclusive "cheesesteak spring rolls." i took her word for it and in about 10 minutes i was pleasantly surprized!
after my first really good drink and such good and unique food i decided to call my friends and suggested we change our plans. they agreed but because their were so many of us we had to move to the dining room. however that wasn't a problem because we still had a great view of that giant movie screen and 3 of their other 11 big screens. my friends were also equally impressed by the decor and atmosphere of this place.
by the time all of my friends arrived there were eight of us enjoying this great flyers game in an awesome place. we kept the pitchers of beer flowing as well as some unique and great tasting specialty drinks. we all shared a few appetizers and some sandwiches and we couldn't believe how good the food was. aside from being very afffordable, we had a burger and two different pizzas that were out of this world.
us being diehard flyers fans, we were pleasantly surprized by the rest of the enthusiasm that was in the bar as well. this place was charged with excitement from every goal to fight to penalty. what made it even more unique was a hockey style siren that the bartender blarred everytime the flyers scored. the energy in the this place was intense from the drop of the puck to the final second.
what also impressed us was the decor, that proved this was truely a philly sports haven. from tables and walls covered in philly sports memorabilia to urinal screens that resembled the dallas star and had to's number in the middle.
for a night that was planned to be a chill night on my boys couch, this turned into a great night out. not only did we watch the flyers dominate a game, we also hung around for karaoke that we found out they have every saturday and wednesday.
all in all what was supposed to be a cheesesteak and flyers game, turned into some a great win with great food, drinks, and a fun night out.
because of the great atmosphere, the friendly staff, and the reasonable prices, this is definitely our place to watch the birds in the playoffs and one of our new favorite spots.
