a bit of an uphill walk from the hotel, sitka and spruce is on capital hill in seattle. sitka and spruce is tucked into a large, renovated warehouse space containing a butcher shop and full blown wine and liquor store as well as other boutiques. sitka and spruce defines the open kitchen concept, almost as though you walked into someone’s home. there are a range of choices from simple, bread, butter and jam to ful medames, a dish i haven’t had since i returned from egypt. everything is farm fresh or baked that day. as i spied plates coming from the kitchen, nothing looked boring, everything had color and vibrancy.   of course i was going to order the ful, it looked too good to pass up, plus the nostalgia factor of a fond memory in north africa. the ful medames was delicious, with deep flavor and a wonderful soft boiled egg. for some, cold, heavily spiced lentils with fresh herbs isn’t breakfast, but to me, absolutely fabulous. i actually got a half order of ful and a full order of bread

sitka & spruce is back. it's as good as it ever was... maybe even better. as much as i adored the randomness of the old location, the restaurant finally has a remarkable space to match its food.

simply stellar. right now this is my favorite restaurant in seattle. i've been here 4 times including once when we rented out the whole place. every time has been stellar! the menu changes every day and i've never seen anything that was remotely the same. the food here is creative and delicious, the atmosphere laid back, and the prices reasonable - high-brow food without the attitude. i'd recommend sticking with the small plates so you can sample a broad range.

the restaurant is definitely not for the non-adventurous eater, but there's really nothing too obscure on the menu either - just intriguing new combinations of fresh local ingredients that always turn out amazing.

fallen by the wayside. i used to love this place for all of its eccentricities. but the last several visits were woefully unnacceptable and just plain boring.

it feels like matt has been so busy with his other projects that this place is being ignored and allowed to sink--so to speak.

preparations are markedly less interesting and poorly cooked. a leathery, unadorned pork shoulder--which matt could have previously pulled off with skill a nod to simplicity and regionality--is now the norm. honestly, most folks parents can do a better pork shoulder.

many dishes come sans critical ingredients described on chalkboard menus. when we inquired as to why the gnocchi alla romano with foraged mushroom's arrived with no mushrooms, the server shrugged his shoulders and said "the cook must have run out"

this format really worked well with the presence of a dedicated food fanatic and talented chef. but if you take away the matt, you find there's not much left..

this tiny restaurant, located in a quaint sort of "mini" mall, is a jewel! the seating is limited, but well worth making a reservation to go here. we went for brunch and were very impressed by not only the service and the menu, but the food itself. there were 5 five us, so we opted to share plates because everything looked so wonderful no one wanted to choose one thing. we had the roasted lettuces, asparagus with egg, and several additional egg dishes. i'd be hard pressed to decide which one was the best because they were all unique and delicious.

i’ve only been to sitka and spruce for weekend brunch and their food has always surprised me — because the menu always changes. situated in the back of the melrose market, sitka and spruce focuses on using local ingredients and serving their food as a work of art. whether it is some pastry that is sweet and yummy or a savory dish with baked eggs or forest foraged mushrooms, you will always get something interesting at sitka for brunch

we went early before a play at the local theatre; the ambience was delightful as were the several staff persons with whom we interacted.  the menu is limited, but fun-seasonal-marvelously sized to share.  we enjoyed a sturgeon & root vege platre and a rabbit leg preparation that were both excellent.  this establishment is more suited for a gormet than gourmand.  our dinner was spendy, but provided value for a special occasion.  b & j of bellevue

with a hipster, unique atmosphere and deliciously shared entrées, the sitka & spruce bar was a great little place to enjoy a nice meal, with a cooking show thrown in. we were seated at a bar right alongside the countertop where the chefs prepared our food, so we were mesmerized by their flair as they chopped, diced, sautéed and plated our dishes. the chefs were easy going and were quick to answer all of our questions and strike up a conversation as they cooked. served family-style, with each member of our party getting a small plate to pick and choose, you get a good variety of dishes, depending on what you order. the food was beautiful to look at- plating was superb with a taste to match. flavours popped and danced on your tastebuds, as there's no beating the locally grown fresh foods used by the sitka & spruce bar. i would recommend for a light meal and a good time.

sat at the large table right in front of the chefs and got to watch many dishes being made! i loved out brunch orders. very light yet fulfilling. i had a frittata dish while my friend had the rabbit. the rabbit was a bit different than what i expected... i thought the meat would be more gamey tasting. overall good experience, the decor of the restaurant was excellent!

this place has a great space in the back of a warehouse-like building with incredibly high ceilings and windows covering one wall. i really enjoyed sitting up at the bar where you can watch the chefs in action. our brunch was fresh and flavourful, the salmon pate was my favourite.

disappointed. this used to be one of our favorite restaurants. not all of the dishes were outstanding as we had come to expect. the service was ragged at best and confusing as to when the dishes appeared and what they were paired with. the dishes came in unpredictably and poorly timed. the gnundi was delicious but was served separtae from everything else -would have been better if served along side the fish. in the end, the waiter had to retrieve the bill because he forgot to add the wine. we may or may not be back.

misrepresented. we made reservations well in advance for new years eve. on new years eve day we received a call from them letting us know that there was only one menu that night and the cost would be $140.00 per person. so probably around 350.00 + per couple. with drinks- more. odd that they called us and odd that did not let us know when we called to make reservations. we cancelled and were lucky enough to be seated at japonessa. had a fabulous meal and did not feel manipulated into paying a $350+ bill at the end. assume some folks cancelled their new year's eve dinner and were left with no place to eat.

to say that my meal at sitka & spruce was an extremely satisfying one would be quite an understatement. having food like this is certainly a lifechanger as this is the first time in quite a while where i've felt that i actually ate wholesome food as it is essentially the complete opposite of the processed foods i'm used to eating back home. everything i put in my mouth felt natural for my body to consume not only for nutrition but also for pure enjoyment. i hope that me writing this post can justly negate the comments of the food at sitka & spruce being "extremely weird, small in amount, very overrated, and food only for hipsters".
