good food on a patio in palm springs. coming to palm springs on a flight that literally took all day thanks to typical texas april weather, i arrived in psp absolutely starving. we stopped at sherman's and were quickly treated to excellent service and delicious open face sandwiches. the service was outstanding, with 3 different staff attending. i had a combination sandwich plate consisting of two breads topped with chicken salad and two with tuna salad, and the salads were piled high... more than enough to eat at one sitting. the plate also contained very good cole slaw and a pickle.

the patio was a comfortable 76o and a bright sun shiny day. this gets a lot worse, i've seen 121o there. nevertheless, been here before and will likely return when out this direction.

hey palm springs, what happened to sherman’s? okay so i’m a pastrami snob so i have very high expectations for a reuben sandwich. pastrami was stringy and overly greasy. i had to literally spit out much of the pastrami. the worst was the oasis salad which was wilted and swimming in dressing. i don’t want to be mean but it looked as if it came out of the garage. inedible. the smell of urine presumably from the homeless met me at the front door. sherman’s, i love ya but i think you need to step up ur game to what made ur reputation so many years ago.

saw this on triple d, so thought we’d give it a try. only bought 2 sandwiches for take out, a brisket and a pastrami. if i only bought the brisket i would give them maybe a 2. it’s just very plain and dry. i cook a lot of brisket so i wasn’t overly impressed. the pastrami sandwich though i would give a 5. excellent! i’d go back for that. a busy chaotic place...very popular.

i was really excited to visit sherman’s and was left underwhelmed. from the rushed frazzled server to the outdated decor, the giant somewhat plain tasting sandwich. i am not and will not be rushing back.

not everyone appreciated my friend bob’s stark honesty as much as i did.  for nearly twelve years, bob was my most trusted source for information on the santa fe dining scene.  he was also a huge advocate for my writing, even when his reaction to one of my particularly “long way around” missives was “what?.”  from a style perspective, he was a “get to the point” guy while your humble blogger sometimes (okay, okay, always) takes a circuitous, raconteur’s route to get somewhere.   bob often chided me for not liking cumin on new mexican food, once telling me “when you fault a place for cumin it immediately moves up on my list of places to try.”  perhaps because of the scarcity of just-off-the-boat seafood in our landlocked state, he frequented pappadeaux which i told him for my tastes should be renamed “pappa don’t.”  for years i tried getting bob to submit comments to the blog (“to elevate the dialogue” i pleaded), but he preferred our one-on-one conversations.

originally opened in 1963 by sherman harris as a “new york-style family restaurant” and now serving both residents and palm springs visitors at two locations daily it was immediately following breakfast at cheeky’s that a ten-minute walk was made to sherman’s delicatessen and bakery, the sizable space absolutely packed on sunday morning just prior to 9:00am but service friendly and efficient with just a few minutes wait for seating.

without doubt a local landmark, the restaurant’s lengthy history dating back to the days of palm springs as a hollywood playground for the likes of sinatra, monroe and hope proudly displayed in photos of those and many others dining within the friendly confines of 410 east tahquitz canyon way, diners visiting sherman’s in 2017 will reportedly find little to have changed since the “old days” in terms of recipes and setting, the iconic artwork obviously an exception but the pastrami still cut-to-order and breads as well as desserts still baked fresh on-site daily.

known for their famous sandwich board and latkes, the latter’s featured spot on season 26 of diners drive-ins and dives turning already good business for the harris family’s second generation ownership into booming, it was with the lengthy all-day menu in hand and a pastry case looming large that the decision was made to sample one of the “chef’s specialties” first, the best-of-both-worlds beef n’ latkas placing a half-pound of fatty pastrami between two potato pancakes with all the fixins’, the meat itself moist with a good bit of smoke and spice while the spuds were crispy on the outside, fluffy at the center and without a drop of grease to be found.

promising everything to be kosher and focused on local sourcing as much as possible, the enormous omelet, knish and cinnamon bread french toast ordered one table over unquestionably tempting, it was with an eye on both appetite and time that the decision was instead made to progress straight to dessert, the 8” tall san jacinto slice any chocolate lover’s dream with a thick spread of ganache overlying two layers of cake and mousse with a core of creamy cheesecake while the carrot cake, taken to go, was pretty impressive in its own right with great moisture and spice sweetened by fruit and walnut-studded cream cheese icing.

sherman’s has a remarkable past.  the kosher restaurant began with sherman harris, united states army soldier, who fought in the battle of the bulge to defeat the german campaign in western europe.  upon returning to the u.s. on the queen mary, sherman resettled in palm springs, became a cook at laury’s steak ranch, and eventually opened his own first restaurant.

given sherman's is a popular tourist destination, i wondered if it would live up to the 'hype'. i am pleased to write that our meals, chicken soup with matzo balls, chopped liver, & a ruben, we're all very good. the service was professional & friendly & the deli had a nice relaxed vibe with a good demographic range. the prices were reasonable & the portions generous. it was a pleasant dinner & the place seems deserving of the many positive reviews.

for everything that south end lacks, it makes up for in service. i came here looking for the small diner experience, i got just that - minus the apple pie. as soon as i walked in, i was grated by both of the employees by the counter. they were both pretty chatty - which i would normally hate, but today was a chatty day for me too since this was my first stop in my east coast backpacking adventure.

the diner is pretty small and plain. the only thing that stands out is the feeling that everyone else in the diner seems to be a "regular".

i ordered a western omelet and biscuits with sausage gravy. i zoned out for a bit but turn around definitely had to be less than 7 minutes. something i must've missed on the new menu was that the western is smother in sausage gravy. so, i had 2 items in the same sauce. this is only the 2nd or 3rd time i have biscuits and gravy but it has been the best so far. even though the omelet was smothered in sauce, it was still really good.
