amazing ,delicious clean and inexpensive!. this restaurant is absolutely worth a trip from the 5 boros!
the food was so good i almost cried!
so much better than the malaysian restaurant in china town manhattan and so much better than the trash hole in elmhurst everyone raves about! and yes i have been to them both! there are other malaysian restaurants in nyc both those are the restaurants with the highest reviews which puzzles me!
the crowd was mixed not a williamsburg type of crowd. it was a group of sophisticated diners. they were ethnically mixed. asians, africans (from africa), mexicans, indian/pakistanis, an ethnically diverse crowd.
if i walked in and saw all white bread of america maybe with their "hot" asian girlfriends i would not be impressed. because those types usually all frequent the same substandard places. but the food is good so that is why it draws all kinds of people.
first of all i am allergic to shell fish. we first ordered roti canai as an appetizer. coconut rice to go with everything. then several entrees. each entree was a flavor explosion!

really unique and not only delicious but of high quality unlike the trash heap in elmhurst queens. malaysia grill in manhattan is one of my favorite restaurants in the 5 boros

my hubby asked which i liked better we couldn't decide. we had different dishes. both are really good!
i only compare the same cuisines. this at least ties with malaysia grill.
i think the highlight of the meal though everything was good was a tropical fruit/chicken dish! it is caleld ayam tropical with mango lime, papaya and lychee! amazing!
we had a grouper dish with coconut curry. it was unique and addictive! we also had hokkien chow mee and we have had that at a few other malaysian restaurants it was best here we agree!
finally we had the duck with plum sauce simple and delicious!
if you think the malaysian trash hole in elmhurst is good, go there! save this for discriminating diners!
it is only one store away from the famous carlo's bakery! (from the tv show cake boss)
we did notice it when we went to carlos but we didn't pay too much attention. i am paying attention now! amazing! we were not expecting it to be so good since we have been let down by so many malaysian and asian restaurants in nyc. other than malaysia grill in manhattan this is the best we have been to!
the restaurant is clean and they have a funny sign up in the bathroom that is nice and kind of rambling saying they want to keep it clean and please do not put paper towels in the toilet it is a constant headache and so very messy!
so they are clean, have great food, the prices are moderate, and it is easy to get to. delicious clean and inexpensive! there is reason not to go!

the service was fast as we showed up in the last hour before the restaurant was winding down to close. this cost spot has great food and i can finally admit to loving malaysian cuisine. i can't say that this is something that hit my taste buds but i was impressed with everything i had asked for and same was for my friends. the service was friendly and very accommodating as we showed up so last-minute but were so lost on where to start. a hreat place to done in hoboken.

my all-time favorite dish here is kari udang paired with coconut rice. top that with the coconut pudding (dessert) which is served in the coconut shell - rich, delicious, with a subtle flavor.

favorite appetizers -
chicken satay served with a yummy peanut sauce
roti kanai - a crispy, flaky roti (flat bread) served with yummy chicken and potato curry sauce.

i ordered take away from the lunch specials menu.
you get your pick of rice, "topping" and some soup. the prices are really reasonable but the flavours are really great! i got a lemongrass shrimp with coconut rice and veg soup 🍜

definitely give it a try!

a small, not-so-expensive joint that has a sizable range of both vegetarian and non-vegetarian food items. we tried the beef randang and mixed vegetable preparation. the randang wasn't bad but more chewy than we had hoped for. the veg preparations were good and so were the soups. polite helpful staff and a open kitchen in close proximity. the joint does not have a washroom.

you should not judge a book by its cover we say. that's the way i see satay malaysian cuisine in hoboken. the bloc where it is located is mainly known for housing carlo's bakery, the famous original bakery of the cake boss. this place has some amazing food that is worth to try whether you like asian food or not. we went several times and, each time, our experience there has been fantastic. the decor is quite colorful, with the kitchen giving the impression the dining room is outside with its roof-like awning.

this place is a must try. i have been here multiple times. their roti kanai is a-freaking-amazing! so soft and the curry is so flavorful! the satay is lovely and we always get it every time we go there. the place is small yet lovely and is almost always packed with people. if you haven't tried this place out and are a foodie, you should give it a try. i'm sure you will love it. parking is a hassle, but you know this is hoboken we are talking about. parking is always a problem here lol. so if you stay close by, just walk or take a bus to get there ;)

good food. almost everything is cooked in coconut gravy. that's how  it is done in cantonese cuisine. so kudos! the parking is a huge problem and the fried ice cream solves it. roti kanay veg is amazing but they forgot to serve me the two potatoes in the gravy. :p  i shall have to explore more of this restaurant to know the dishes well. but the roti kanay is outstanding! xie xie satay :p

so after being pestered by my brother we finally ended up having amazing malaysian food at the satay. very wide menu and fantastic food. friendly servers. the spinach and chicken soup was yum. for appetizers we had shrimp dumplings which were out of the world and roti kanai, a malaysian specialty which was yum too. for entrees we called for chicken and shrimp fired rice and chicken in xo sauce. the helping was good enough for three of us to fill our plates twice! after the sumptuous main course we polished it off with fried ice cream which was fantastic! i'm glad my brother ended up pulling me here! also this joint has byob so if you wanna carry your booze please do!

i tried malaysian cuisine for the first time, so my review may not be accurate, but here is my personal experience.
coast effective definitely. we ordered a dish of lamb and a seafood dish, both were what resto recommended, but neither of them made any impression,  lamb didn't feel that fresh. the seafood dish was just watery, no real taste to the meat or curry.
only good thing was they allow to take your own drinks inside, they don't have a bar of their own.

taste: 5/10

ambiance: 6/10

service: 6/10

value for money : 7/10

reasonable malaysian food. when we were approaching this restaurant, we noticed a long line of people waiting outside. we had never seen a line so long for a malaysian place, but soon we figured out that the line was for carlos' bakery, home of tlc's cake boss. fortunately, there was no line for this small malaysian restaurant. the food wasn't very authentic, but it was quite tasty. my malaysian wife was happy with the wait-staff's recommendation, and her own choice. overall, the service was reasonable and the food was tasty. i would recommend this place.
