the décor is best described as funky though psychedelic would work equally well.  my wife ordered pad thai with chicken while i went full boar with jambalaya, hold the file gumbo.  the amount of food is generous and the overall the meal was more than decent, but not as good as i expected based on prior reviews.  perhaps our dining on a monday was the problem.

eclectic decor and we enjoyed sitting in the barn area out back. great variety on the menu and excellent seafood dishes. we saved room for dessert and it did not disappoint!

excellent food and drinks - and no summer crowds. can be 4.5 stars based on the food (slight imperfections), but overall experience was excellent, hence the 5 stars.
the drinks were excellent - i had cucumber cooler 11, which was not very sweet and very refreshing, and the mexican mule, made with mezcal - if you like mezcal, this was much stronger, but still a very tasty drink.
for the appetizers we had salmon and white bean crostini - over very tasty (salmon rilette was a bit too dry), and kale caesar salad, which was excellent (my son, who is not into salads, asked for the second helping).
all the dinner dishes were excellent. pad thai - great flavor, very classic, homey and delicious. teriyaki salmon was tasty, and crispy spinach it was served with was spectacular. sword fish was cooked just right and served with aromatic summer vegetables. tuna ratatouille was encrusted with vegetables and crispy fried (just a touch overcooked at the ends, but very tasty), and heirloom tomato compote was excellent.
all in all, an excellent meal.
great service - prompt and patient (took us some time to decide what to drink and then what to eat).

highly recommended. also, this restaurant offers a nice refuge from humongous summer crowds by the wharf, so double highly recommended during summer.

salvation is a lie. there are two salvations- pre remodel and post remodel. the pre-remodel (pre 2011) was an interesting restaurant. post-remodel is a mean girl terror show. if you want to be abused high school style- this is the place for you. you walk in and maybe after 15 minutes some staff might notice you. there are 5 boring taps. if the bartender isn't too busy with their friends you might get a good drink and then again maybe not. the food has become downright bad.
tourists who find salvation rate it interesting. locals know how far it has fallen and stay away. most importantly the owner manipulates the ratings- try it out- post a bad review and it gets removed. this is not a great restaurant. this is a sad restaurant that rests on laurels of days gone by.

i had an amazing dinner experience here. off-season in march. had the ox tail ragu over gnocchi. the dish was outstanding! fresh, flavorful and perfect portion size. service and atmosphere was solid. good but small selection of beers. definitely coming here again!

salvation cafe is a great choice for sunday brunch. the food was excellent, prices were affordable, service was great, and the cozy dining room made for a romantic setting. i would definitely visit salvation cafe again on any future visit to newport. one of the best restaurants i have tried out in the area, and definitely the most accommodating in terms of dietary restrictions. while researching healthy restaurants in the newport area, i randomly came across salvation cafe. despite many trips to the newport area, i had never seen or heard of the cafe. the location on broadway street instead of the more popular and congested thames street could explain the missed opportunity. i was delighted with the cozy atmosphere, healthy menu options, and quiet atmosphere at this cafe. food brunch was excellent. i also appreciated the ability to specialty order the breakfast burritos vegetarian or vegan (not many restaurants give you this option). the burrito was a delicious combination of black bea

fun, funky, tasty. cool atmosphere, creatively decorated in an artsy-funky style, the salvation cafe is a great place to hang out with friends and/or eat at the bar... the service is very friendly, and the drinks are well made. i highly recommend the ribs, pad thai, and diver scallops.

a comfortable, relaxed environment with a great (small) eclectic menu. i had the pad thai, which was nothing super special, but a friend had mako shark and it was delish. also, try the tuna poke and jar of sangria.
