lived in chicago and was a frequent diner at portillos.then retired to arizona and found food happiness ....two portillos locations near phoenix!!! closet portillos is a 50 mile drive for us. but when you want the best chicago hotdog or italian beef....well worth the drive.

prairie moon is a long-time evanston, il., standby when it comes to casual, fun restaurants. but because it’s menu skews a bit cajun and barbeque, i haven’t been to eat there since my angioplasty two years go . my wife recently decided we should go there with friends for dinner, though, so i braced for maybe at most a salad. but i was pleasantly surprised that the chefs there were able to modify a menu offering and still keep it tasty and hearty. kudos to you, prairie moon. trout, potatoes and broccoli at prairie moon, no salt and no crust but wonderful in taste and simplicity. looking at the menu, which includes both large and a small plate offerings, i was thinking fish would be the least salty, least fat-filled offering i could get. both salmon and trout are on the menu but each dish has no-nos for me. the salmon comes with mashed potatoes and butter. the trout comes with a pine-nut crust. i don’t eat nuts and usually crust means salt, either in cheese or some other way. so i asked

heavy saucing & nasty bathroom. i think one needs to stay away from anything with sauces at prairie moon--both my husband and i had entrees with sauce and the sauce overcame both the chicken and the steak. our daughter had a burger and that looked good; she certainly enjoyed it. the ladies' needs a thorough cleaning badly--we couldn't get out of there quickly enough!

nice menu and decor. nice menu, moderate prices, aka the standard $10 burger and $15 meal. they do have "small plates" at around $10, but they are indeed quite small, good for when you're not that hungry. the environment was really nice to look at, comfortablea and clean, but extremely loud and a little bit on the warm side.

i had the grilled tenderloin in pesto cream sauce with broccoli and mashed potatoes. the mashed potatoes were fantastic, the broccoli was plain and boring and the tenderloin was tough and dry, not at all as expected. the sauce was very bland. overall it was just ok. i generally prefer only eating at "sit down" places than can cook as well or better than i can. my husband had the moon burger and said it was excellent.

cajun-mexican-american fusion. we went here late-ish one night, and we weren't very hungry, so we only ordered one entree and 2 starters. we sat round the back, outside, which proved a smart move, as the front dining area is more a bar and very noisy so if you want a more relaxed intimate experience definitely get a seat out back.

the food is basically a fusion cuisine; cajun themed tacos, the gulf shrimp and crawfish etouffee was unbelievable, etcetera. the food is pricey, but on balance, i would say that the quality definitely is up there.

their beer selection, too, is up to the level you'd expect for $18 a plate restaurants, with a mix of craft brewery, local and imported beers.

would go back on a special occasion for dinner, and will definitely go back for lunch some time.

great atmosphere, great food. we decided to try prairie moon our first night in evanston for two reasons: closest proximity to our hotel next door and we also got 15% off by showing them our room key! glad i followed the advice below...the fish tacos with the blackened tilapia were a really tasty treat! really appreciated the warm & cozy candlelit tables. wait staff and hostess were very sweet! we'll defiantely plan on returning for future visits.
