good sandwiches, great meats, even better people.. i try to eat here a couple times a month when i am in town. never knew this place even existed until i asked a family friend where they had purchased the prettiest/freshest beef tenderloin i have ever had one easter evening. they said pinegrove, so i checked it out. glad i did. i try to get all my meat here now. it's always fresh, and if you think otherwise, they will make it right. they have been around for nearly 40 years i believe, and that says a lot. good old fashioned, family owned and run operation can't be beat.

easily the best deli in jacksonville.. been reading about this place for a while and made the trek up from the southside today, it was worth the trip.

i was dying for a cuban, and this one is made with homemade pork roast, not some crap you get at publix, but real pulled pork roast. my only disappointment was that it wasn't toasted in butter, and short on pickles, but it was better than anything i've had around here. the potato salad was likewise another disappointment, no celery or onion that i could find. the sweet tea was perfect.

i also picked up some authentic hot italian sausage from ny that is phenomenal, and priced right at $5.99 lb. this stuff alone is worth the trip. brisk lunch crowd starts falling in at noon, you may want to call ahead.

now for directions, forget your gps or anything you can google up, the only way to get there is out i-10w and then south on 17 to park. there is only one red light on 17 and going this way you can make it in less than 15 minutes from baymeadows. go through riverside, which is much more scenic, its going to take closer to 30.

great cuban!. this is a great place to grab lunch when you are hungry! the cuban was excellent with plenty of meat and the onion rings are homemade with just the right amount of breading on them. has a small dining area but has a couple of picnic tables out front.

overpriced. growing up, neighborhood delis was a way of life for me. reading the positive reviews about pinegrove i knew i had to take a ride over as true delis are not very common to jacksonville. unfortunately pinegrove deli did not meet my expectations.

the front deli counter cases were nearly empty giving an impression of poor stocking. despite this they were taking orders, so i figured they must keep their goods in the back. looking for a ny style lunch i had their reuben and a coke. spending over $11, i was disappointed in what i received.

the sandwich was a decent size, but not for that price. i would expect to pay that at a restaurant, not at a deli, and even then with some kind of side dish. all i got was 3 pickle chips. while the sandwich was ok, i just cannot justify making the trip for that price.

neat place.... ...get a great philly cheesesteak sandwich for lunch, eat it on one of the outside picnic tables and then pick up a couple of very nice filets for dinner. you are now at the pinegrove deli.

you also have to love a place that just points at the display case for your beverage choices and has you pay after you've eaten your food - now that's 60+ years of trust!!! : )

like eating at mama's kitchen table!. my husband & i dropped into this unconventional, hidden jewel of a restaurant for lunch today. it's a house or garage that's been converted into a neighborhood market and a deli. we ordered a sandwich & tea and sat down at a table with a mixture of other hungry business people, fscj students and locals, who were obviously enjoying their lunches. our name was called, we picked up our lunch, and sat down to devour our large sweet tea & huge tuna, lettuce & tomato on wheat sandwich. it was delicious! we don't get to the area often will definitely go back again. the food was great, the service was better. thanks guys!

best burger in town very likely!. new review of pine grove market & deli, a fantastic true hole-in-the-wall in avondale, where you can buy aged meat, deli items (try their pickles from ohio, sweet, spicy and insanely good), and what do you know, breakfast and lunch. other local foodies have been writing about this place and having some rare lunch time lately, i rushed to meet a friend there. it's had a reputation of being a place no one wanted to share for fear of others ordering favorite food items until they're out of stock.

housed in a small nondescript hut-like building off pine grove, there were lots of cars trying to park during a busy business lunch so that's always a sign you're somewhere good. seriously craving a burger, their menu states their burger meat is freshly ground so i ordered the 1/4 pounder medium with all the fixings ($5.99) and a side of their homemade onion rings ($3.49). my friend, mitch, ordered their triple decker turkey club ($8.99).

we wait for the food (about 20 minute or so wait, my burger no doubt and lunch rush cause for delay), and when it arrives, i don't care about the wait because it looks juicy. salivating, i took my first bite, and easily, this is one of the best burgers in town. it kinda puts five guys to shame, in my honest opinion, and the bread is just the right texture, not too mushy but soft enough so i don't hurt myself eating it. the burger patty is a generous 1/4 pound (smallest burger, they also come in 1/2 pounders), perfectly cooked (no hockey pucks here), and well seasoned. you can taste how fresh it is. knowing my hubby needs a snack later today, i saved the other half (although i really did not want to but that's how much i love my hubby). the onion rings? battered in a cornmeal mix for extra crisp and fried perfect with no ounce of grease on them, i am in heaven. mitch loved his club (so healthy, i'm making him eat fried food next time); i tried his pasta salad, so fresh and tasty.

secret's out avondale residents; we're coming back and parking in front of your house for more deli grub at pine grove. next up to try is their breakfast and hot subs. thanks ron bajalia for working hard to feed us ravenous carnivores!

pinegrove is another uniquely jacksonville market and deli located on pinegrove ave in avondale. this little place has a definite old-school feel, and the deli’s website claims it has been a neighborhood icon for over 60 years. it's in a tiny building in

my favorite sandwich spot. i have been going to pinegrove for years. nader and company do a great job of delivering consistent mouth watering sandwiches, subs and burgers. for my money, the best cuban in jax. he serves them with tony packos pickles which sets them off perfectly.
you will miss the place if you aren't looking for it off park street but they have re-vamped the inside to open up more seating.

deli-cious. i have been to pinegrove deli several times now and they do not disappoint. i especially like their meatball subs. i find their prices rather steep, but they really do pack on the meat. still, 1.99 for a 5 ounce pasta salad? that seems kinda high. or perhaps i was just mad because i couldn't afford to eat 2 pounds of it like i wanted to.
3/5/11 update- tried one of their burgers for the first time, and i must say that it was without doubt one of the best hamburgers i've ever had. got an order of onion rings to go with and i was in heaven.

i was just introduced to pine grove today. it is definitely tucked away, but was with a local that recommended it. standard deli fare along with named customer favorites. my friend got the pastrami while i got da nader (pastrami, roast beef, taboulleh, and swiss on rye). the seating is a bit limited. however, the drink cooler by our seat surprised me with the likes of nehi, sun drop, and cheerwine. two sandwiches and drinks were just under $20. the kitchen is just behind the meat counter (they are also a meat market) so you can watch the grill/assembly. the sandwiches were excellent, full of meat and flavor. they were both out quickly, making for a most expedient lunch. definitely going to return.
