small room with a little counter-and-stools by the door, what you really notice when you walk in is the magnificent smell. the next thing you notice is how crowded the room is, and how patiently people are waiting. there might be one person at the counter; everybody else is waiting for take-out. the three-four women behind the counter are running like madmen. someone just got the last barvarian cream? no problem, a new tray will be out in only a few minutes. the donuts are humongous and yet light and fluffy. (hmm, i'm getting hungry!) prices are very reasonable, and the service is as quick as they can make it. scrupulously clean, too. i've been in more than a few donut shops in my time, including the most touted, and paula's beats them all cold. in fact, most of the most highly touted in buffalo were dingy with dirty floors. and i've never seen so many varieties at once. i got the impression they'd be embarrassed if i'd asked for flavor they didn't have. one good thing i discovered is that you can call in an order on your way there and it'll be ready for pick-up when you arrive. good food, good people. what's not to like? (unless you're a diabetic; i do *not* recommend them for those with sugar problems!)
