pane e vino

share tweet recently i took a trip to providence, rhode island.  your initial thoughts about where this post is going were my initial thoughts before and during my flight into tf green international airport.  boredom and blah seemed to take over my whole mind as i strolled through the airport wondering how i would fill my belly in a town full of chain restaurants.  

i wanted to like this place, but my experience was very disappointing. it was my first time so i asked the waiter what the person next to me was eating. he said “the veal”, which i understood to mean the veal from the menu. i looked at the menu, saw it was $27, and ordered it. the waiter never told me it was actually the veal special, and that it was almost double the price of a normal veal. i didn’t find out until the check arrived. 

the manager, nick rampone, said that the waiter assumed i didn’t care about the cost, so he didn’t tell me. i find this upsetting, because the waiter shouldn’t decide what’s important to me. he knew that the special wasn’t listed, so it was his responsibility to tell me, regardless of his opinion. as a guest, i'm relying on him.

horrible food and sevice, sorry. ordered black squid ink, eggplant parmesan, lobster was overcooked and chewy, waitress with an attitude, way overpriced for mediocre fod and service

i'm a fan!. i'm a fan of this place. i think its one of the better (if not best) italian restaurant on federal hill. food is consistently good. waitstaff is a bit rough around the edges, but the service is good.

favorite restaurant on the hill. you really need to try this restaurant out! they have amazing local specials including fresh seafood specials all of the time. we love the black squid ink linguine fra diavolo and the frutti di mare. the service is always great and it is a very welcoming and inviting atmosphere. it's a great spot for dinner before going into providence for a show or a concert.

i love pane e vino. absolutely delicious. this is one of my favorite restaurants, period!


the food is excellent, and i love the bread pudding...best i have ever had!. my boyfriend and i like to try different things so we typically share a bunch of dishes between the two of us.


the wine is great, half priced wine bottles on mondays is a godsend!

the ambiance is very perfect for a date or for a night out with friends. very cozy, upscale decor. good music, and it's not too loud.

our new place!. why five stars? best gnocchi i have ever had! great unique appetizers. and a wonderful duck entree over ravioli. something like 25 glasses of wine available and over 100 bottles. best bread pudding i've ever eaten. friendly service, i've been here several time and they always remember us!
negatives: the bar is very small, it's hard to get a seat. the traffic on the street can be tough so leave early, at least they have valet.

the antipasto platter of meats & cheeses was fantastic. the entrees, not so much. i had the orecchiette with broccoli and sausage...pasta was cooked perfectly and the sausage was good quality. the sauce was salty. my partner had the chicken milanese. two pieces of fried cutlets with arugula and tomatoes & some parm cheese. very dry with no sauce whatsoever. the cannoli was delish with a nice creamy cheese. overall, it was just ok. the atmosphere is quaint and relaxing. better options on the hill.

always good. we went here for the first night of restaurant week, food was outstanding. we split the beet salad and arancini apps. the arancini was great, the beet/goat cheese salad had a nice balance. i had the baked gnocchi with san marzano tomatoes and smoked cheese and it was simple and just right. my girlfriend had the scallops which were also very tasty, however it would not have been enough food for me had i ordered it. she had the tiramisu and i had the bread pudding, both were fresh and delicious. the service (outside of getting the wrong app at first) was also good. our waitress seemed knowledgeable about the menu and w/o us asking she added a second table next to ours for more space, as it was very small. that was very considerate and appreciated.

...substituted a layer of perfectly prepared pasta and another layer of cannellini beans (protein!), for a dish that was so delicious and satisfying...

great authentic italian food! try the bread pudding, it is heavenly! service is always top notch and the staff is friendly!

a very beautiful red head girl told me that this restaurant had the best bread pudding around. this place did not disappoint the bread pudding was amazing, excellent wait staff and service with a smile. i would recommend this place as on of my top picks when i travel to this area.

with providence restaurant week officially underway, i decided to head down to pane e vino to enjoy a three-course dinner for $29.95. located on federal hill, this popular italian restaurant has received lots of praise recently. in 2011, pane e vino was named as the best restaurant in the state by rhode island monthly…so i've been dying to check them out for myself! i was looking forward to my reservation all week long ( yes, all i think about is food ). so i arrived with a big appetite and some high expectations. the question is…would pane e vino live up to the hype? insalata di barbabietole -farm fresh roasted red & gold beets, goat cheese, candied pecans, frisée, pancetta vinaigrette ok, so i understand that this is providence restaurant week and all, which means discounted prices, but four slices of beets? that's all? really?!!! aside from the size of the portion, the taste didn't exactly blow me away either. the ratio of beets to goat cheese was completely off. there were a f

terrible service, food and even valet!!!!. honestly we are a younger couple who decided to take my brother visiting from out of town here. ignored most of the night. table near computer where waiters entered orders gave us a non-stop helping of whining waiters. lovely view of giantic wooden piller. food was less than desirable. calamari undercooked, drink cups empty and unfilled most of the night, drink menu taken away after 1 round and brought to another table, despite us already ordering alcohol. terrible, terrible, terrible. i have no idea what i spent $140 on. to top off night, the "free valet, gets out of my car and hands me keys and says, "i was in the kitchen and stepped on grease so i apoligize for getting it all over your carpet and clutch". are you kidding me.
