great foodie meal! amazing meal with reasonable prices. had the herb fed snails (how do you make snails eat herbs?) and the lamb special which were both spectacular! very nice le vieux pin red wine as well. will definitely return.

one year and still going strong.. happy one year ulla. you never fail to deliver on all levels.
dinner was spot on. pea soup. spring salmon. polenta cubes. shortrib. cherries. chocolate. lisa's service was as usual the best. we love seeing all of you in action. you will see us often over the next year because we're looking forward to tasting your new dishes.

-----08 may, 2011-----

ulla you really are the best!. we cannot stop talking about your english pea soup. how is it possible for something so simple to taste so amazing? and be so memorable. the vouvray lisa suggested with it took the experience over the top. i almost wanted to cancel my halibut cheeks and have more soup. glad i didn't because they were luscious and sweet. (octopus, shortrib, chocolate cake and apple genoise were devoured too).
congrats on the boulevard piece. you deserve all the attention you are getting!

ulla is our go to spot. ulla. we love you. dinner last week was better than our first visit. we have been in so many times in the last 6 months we have lost count.
your food is stellar. clean, bright, interesting, perfectly prepared.
your room is modern, warm, inviting.
lisa knows your food and wine, professional yet fun. to be reconized and warmly greeted, steered in the right direction is appreciated. that our server remembers what we had before and where we sat is something that is not experienced in many restaurants.
thank you.
thank you.
thank you.
we love spending money at ulla because we get more than our moneys worth. it is the only place we know we can order anything on the menu and love it.
we are looking forward to your new seasonal offerings.

-----26 oct, 2010-----

love this place. we picked the right night to book into ulla last week. we asked 'what should we eat?'
quail with bacon, cauliflower mushrooms and a pomegranate vinagrette. are you kidding? every element on the plate worked. (chef brad has a sense of humour...we loved the surprise!) arancini on truffled mayo. and there was more!
actually every element of the place works. people having fun and sharing their love of food. lisa we love you, but you already know that! brilliant food served in a room that 2 young owners thought long and hard about. they deserve everything that is happening to them.

-----28 aug, 2010-----

ulla's food is unbelievable! lisa steered us in the right direction again.
heirloom tomatoes with beans and watercress in a roasted lemon vinagrette.
momofuku style chicken wings. outstanding!!!!!! (an homage to a restaurant in nyc).
lamb. so tender. so perfectly cooked sous-vide with handmade gnocchi, chanterelles and peas.
not only is the food unbelievable, we learn about ingredients and cooking methods. truly a great experience.
we're thinking next time we let lisa order for us so what we get is a surprise. you cannot go wrong with any food decision you make in ulla!

-----09 aug, 2010-----

we stumbled on ulla last week and what a nice surprise it was! it was a quiet night for them but not for long. if you love food, you will be visiting regularly. (we've already been back!) the menu is small which means everything is fresh. the entire wine list is available by the glass which means it was created to work with the food. the cocktail list is small and only local beer. i believe someone knows who they are. the whole concept is refreshing.
pea soup. fresh. clean. morels add add organic layer.
salad. local greens with beets. red. candy cane. yellow. perfectly dressed with a red wine vinaigrette (hint of rhubarb).
octopus. local. tender. tasty. bright. fresh. warm with the peppery flavour of arugula.
salmon. bright pink. perfectly prepared. celery. who know celery could be so tender? quite possibly one of the best dishes we've ever had.
the best surprise was the service. our server was someone we've come to enjoy over the years and had wondered where she had gone. thank you lisa. you will be seeing us regularly.

lots of fluff, no substance...ordered their version of chicken wings, highly recommended octopus salad and short rib steak for my entree and my wife had this quinoa-type dish. the wings and my steak were cold on arrival, the octopus tasted like sausages - which makes sense because they cooked it on a flat-top that makes everything taste like whatever was last cooked on it - and my wife's dish tasted like cough medicine. if your tastebuds are fooled (as it seems is the case with most reviewers here) by fancy looking food using otherwise flavorless precooked meat and lathered with rich sauces then you will love this place! needless to say we won't be back

wonderful!. i celebrated my birthday dinner at ulla last night and it was a wonderful and memorable meal. the restaurant is small, but it's nicely decorated and comfortable. it didn't feel too crowded. the staff were very welcoming and pleasant, and gave stellar service. i really enjoyed my meal. i ordered the tuna for a starter, the steak for my main, and the chocolate cake for dessert. it was all to die for. the meals everyone ordered were absolutely amazing. everybody at our table was happy. will definitely be back again!

goldengirl. having just spent some time in the food mecca - san fransisco - i have returned home once again discouraged by the local food scene/restaurants here on the island. it was with little expectation that we headed to ulla for dinner last night - and were very pleasantly surprised! the food was excellent, the service excellent, and the drinks excellent. i give them a san fransisco star! now there is only one thing that remains to be seen - consistancy. we are hopefull that this too will be achieved. time will tell.

i ate at ulla last night with my wife on a rare date night. we usually count on our reliable favourites--stage and the brasserie--but took a chance on a new place with great reviews on this site. and it was well worth it. ulla is serving refreshing fine food with simple, well chosen ingredients. the menu is small, but presents plenty of intriguing options. the food is plated beautifully and every main accompanied by creative and enticing sides (e.g. short rib steak with cauliflower ravioli). we had the tomato soup with tasty cheesy toasties, beef tartar, the tender grilled octopus, and the ling cod. the latter two were especially delightful, with the ling cod, which can sometimes be served a touch understated for my taste, a crispy, light winner with perfectly balanced sides. we'll definitely be back.my one quibble is with the lighting. lighting matters--especially for those of us with young kids out for a night alone--and i don't think ulla has yet mastered the atmosphere in a room th

8/10. i've been to ulla once, with my wife. immediately evident that you are in a comfortable room, with a caring staff. our waitress was excited to talk to us about some of the more unique menu items, and wasn't afraid to steer us in a particular direction based on how she read our tastes. loved the octopus. love the rice balls. main courses (crispy chicken and short rib steak) were excellent, but nothing revolutionary. good chocolate cake. a thumbs up first go, and we will surely return to try some of their other creations.

special. there's something really special about ulla. a sense of art and playfulness to the menu, a certain casual elegance in the room, and an attentive staff. this is what a young restaurant is all about, proving itself with a really high batting average in all aspects.

the shortrib steak is phenomenal. i read something further down about how these should be $13.95 mains and i could not disagree more. this is a calibre of cooking that is totally attentive and perfect; you can taste it in every dish. it's not precocious or snobby either, there's a sense of trust coming from the kitchen but the food never feels above you. really, these are flavourful re-imaginings of classic, comforting dishes. the drinks are top notch coming from the bar, too.

i'd say this is a spot to keep an eye on, with a small, frequently changing menu and only 34 seats.. i would love to see this place packed every friday.

exciting flavours, this is one to watch. i went to ulla for the second time, and the overall experience was pleasant. the dining room was full, so we were whisked away to the bar seating. we ordered a bottle of red wine, and sipped away until the bartender took our order. we started with the arancini(basically deep fried mushroom risotto croquettes) and frisee salad, and truffled mayo. for my main, i ordered the crispy chicken with israeli couscous and carrot puree. my friend ordered the pork tenderloin with bacon cheddar apple hash. the flavours of everything worked very well together. the pork was very tender, and the israeli couscous won me over.

suggestions:
i don't think the bartender should serve people who sit at the bar, because it took him quite some time to even talk to us, let alone take our order, perhaps a server should take all the orders.
the arancini were flavourful, but the casing( maybe panko?) was hard to cut into.
overall, the food here is quite rich, but the portioning is good so you don't feel too heavy.

ulla has definitely found a niche in the market, i hope they continue expanding. i wish the young owners the best of luck.
