very poor experience. negligent service and deceptive pricing. buyer beware.

we were surprised to be charged so much for our meal, and asked to clarify the prices. their pricing scheme was confusing and the host & waiters were downright hostile to our questions. my understanding is that a number of dishes we thought were regular dishes turned out to be "specialty dishes" and we were charged an extra $5 apiece for them. at least that's what i think happened because none of their staff seemed to have a clear understanding of their own menu.

poor value and service. would not visit again.

came here for a quick lunch, sort of accidentally. since there were no one else in the place, service was quick. we ordered the chinese yam with fungus, and it was quite good. the spicy potato was also very good, but since we opted not to have rice, we saved most of it for later.

authentic szechuan is hard to get right in north america because the spices used in szechuan aren't readily available here, and if they are, they're generally expensive due to high import costs. that being said, new chongqing is still good and has all the flavours that are familiar to the area (as of 1997, chongqing is no longer part of szechuan/sichuan but an independent municipality). some dishes are good (double cooked pork, fried cabbage with dried pepper), some are decent (lamb with cumin), and others just not worth ordering (kung pao chicken).

this is my favourite sichuan restaurant in vancouver! the food is authentic and the restaurant owner lady is funny and approachable with any concerns. the spicy fish and dandan mien are my favourite authentic dishes!

i had a very unpleasant experience in this restaurant! their service are awful, rude, and unfriendly! their the taste of dishes are very strong compare to other sichuan restaurant. the place is dirty too! also the prices of dishes are very high! not good at all!

if you want have a nice restaurant experience, i suggest you do not choose this restaurant! their quality of service is horrible. very unfriendly! especially one of the server with short hair and without uniform! for me, this is a one-time-visit restaurant only!

it was actually a quick lunch of my friend (i didn’t order anything). the pork hock looked so deeeelish that i had to taste it! the meat was slow-braised until it was fork-tender and succulent. slurp at the collagen of the ham hock as it remained plump and not lumpy. how i wish i could eat this whole thing myself!

average to low service, expensive dishes compare with all other sichuan restaurant, maybe it's because it is in kerrisdale and people are rich here. as for the food, it is only acceptable. not enough flavour. not authentic. 4/10

"the new chongqing" is not "chonqing". the two restaurants share the same name yet are not the same restaurant. clearly "the new chonqing" is piggybacking on the reputation and menu of the real chonqing. if you want the real deal go to commercial or robson. do yourself a favour and skip the disappointment of west 41st.

this place has the worst chinese food i have ever had. the place was dirty the servers were rude. i had just gone on an hour long run, was starving and could not finish my plate because it wasn't edible. i ordered a coke and the can was rusty. do not come here. one chicken dish was literally just whole peanuts and oil- it tasted like vinegar.

what a great surprise. i live in richmond and tend to be dismissive about chinese restaurants in vancouver, especially urban enclaves like kerrisdale. but i was pleasantly surprised by the quality, range, and service at new chongqing. two of us had three dishes, fish, vegetable and "fuchifeipian". if you know what the last item is, i won't have to tell you. if you don't know, i won't frighten you. every dish was excellent, well prepared, hot, and even the presentation was fine. i will be returning again and have recommended this restaurant to friends.
