neptune submarine sandwiches

simple and delicious. these are the closest i've found to the munchie's sandwiches from the 1970's-1980's era in norman. soft, fresh bread, good (if not very generous) meats and cheese and crispy veggies. that oil and vinegar dressing they had at munchies was something special, though.

we went in a week ago, and it was great.  this wasn't my first time in - i used to eat there a lot when i was a college student at ocu almost 30 years ago.  i loved it then, and i still love the place now.  the menu hasn't changed much, but why "fix" what isn't broken?  good food, good portions, friendly staff, prices that are still comparable to what they were (accounting for inflation) back when i was a student.

goodbye subway, hello neptunes!!!!! this is the same chain from my childhood, only one left now. those from the south- it used to be on sw 44 & penn. took under 5 minutes to get my order during the lunch rush, unlike subway which takes 30 minutes. cheap too, $7 for 2 6in subs. we had the chicken salad sub and the deluxe club, both good

used to go to the subway near 63rd and western for a sandwich every now and then— until my pal fitz told me he saw a sewer rat the size of a corgi hanging out by their front door.

now when i want a sandwich, i go to neptune's.

i had driven by this place for years when i'd hit the massage parlors up and down classen, but never made it in the door. when fitz broke the news about subway, i was desperate to find a speedy, fresh, and affordable sandwich shop.

tried jersey mike's, but they play up the "we're italian" thing way to much.

tried jimmy john's, but was a little heavy on the bread and mayonnaise.

tried city bites, but it was too expensive and left me hungry.

tried panera and it was just full of rich folks.

tried quizno's, and that's about as close as i've felt to death since my heroin days.

when i walked into neptune's, my first impression was the amazing prices on the menu. i had been frequenting all the sandwich chains thinking they would be the most affordable, but boy was i wrong. you can get a whole turkey sub for $6.99 at 'tune's!

they have tons of sandwich choices, and even some extras like corn dogs, hot dogs, and frito pies. best thing about the sandwiches is that an extra $0.60 will get you double meat and cheese. if you are really hungry, you can't beat the torpedo sandwich with double meat and cheese. this monster has turkey, ham, roast beef, and, salami piled high— it's a god damned meat fest.

also, fyi: they have a drive-thru line!

so take my word for it— corporate rat-trap subway and get on over to neptune's for a sandwich. you're gut won't be sorry, and your billfold will thank you.

surprisingly good. well i have been here twice, and twice i was not dissapointed. sandwich bread is soft and full without a mess or sogginess you get from the big names, plus the baked potato is small enough (and cheap) to make my meal complete and i didnt even have to break a $20. on my permanate lunch list while i am at this location.

i drive past this place everyday on my way to work and finally stopped in.  oh my god why didn't i try this place sooner.  they have a fan for life.  i crave this place above all other sub places.  its kinda out of the way for me to get here on my only day off but sometimes i stop on the way home and grab a sandwich.  the bread is to die for.  i've never had a bad sandwich yet.

it's like mom packing your school lunch. this is a great little place! don't go in here expecting patty melts or deliciously grilled hoagies. a simple sandwich is all they make here. it's basically deli-style. you don't get all that much, but you don't pay all that much either.

i usually get their grilled chicken sub that's pretty tasty. it comes on a store-bought sub bun, mayo, tomato, and chicken. you get a bag of chips and a drink.

this place is cheap and good. thinking about subway for lunch, go here as it is much much better than the processed crap you get there or at quiznos and it's cheaper.

i have been eating at neptunes for 40 years, and it hasn't changed one bit. reminds me of the sandwiches my grandma made me as a kid.  it's still my favorite place to grab a sub, and the bread really makes it standout above the other sub places. it's very affordable and the quality is consistent. definitely a place to try if you're curious about it, but just don't expect anything fancy. it's certainly worth the 25 minute drive that i make a couple of times per month. you can also buy the bread loaves individually or by the dozen, which i do often.

i hadn't been to neptunes in years. i didn't even know it was still there. i drove by the other day and couldn't wait to come back to eat there. so today i get off work and come cross town to eat only to find out the dining room closes at 3 at it was 3:03 and all the chairs were up on the tables. i didn't want to eat in the car and did not want to take it home to eat it. so i disapointably left and did not get the sub i was craving...

while on vacation i make a point of trying out long standing local restaurants. i got the super sub at neptunes. the bread was nice and soft, but i felt they could put a bit more meat on their sandwiches. still decent though, but nothing special - but maybe that describes a sandwich in general for me.

i had lunch here yesterday.  they have a simple menu with a nice list of standard sub-sandwiches along with a few sides and a soup of the day.  i wasn't offered a choice of bread, so i think everything comes on a white-bread hoagie.  i had the tuna and a cup of clam chowder and both were very good.  very nice price for the product--excellent value and the joint is obviously very popular.  i like this spot much better than the chains.

did i said juicy? you can expect that the sandwich here and that something which i typically find missing at any local delicatessen. this place knows how to make a tasty what sandwich that is simple and traditional in many respects but offers the appropriate dressing to accompany all of the elements. it's incredibly reasonably priced with very fast service and always easy to access with their readily open parking lot. this is a great quick lunch spot that offers reasonably priced eats.

went here for lunch.

first, there are three sandwich shops - one each on three of the four corners. lee's, neptune, and subway. gotta wonder who sited the subway!

ordered chili and a sandwich. both were excellent.

the chili was thick and meaty. in a word hormel - which is good since i like that kind if chili.

the sandwich was served on really fresh bread. the meats and cheese were plentiful and the flavors good. i think mine had roast beef, turkey, salami, ham, and cheese. that and the other ingredients made for a great sandwich.

in my constant lunchtime quests across the metro to find something unique and original to review, i oftentimes forget that sometimes the most basic of meals are a thing that people clamor for questioningly just as much. even something as basic as a sandwich can leave hungry readers perplexed, throwing their hands up in frustration and just hitting up a corporate joint like jimmy john’s because it’s safe and it’s there and it’s all they know.
