nello's pizza

we used to love this local pizza eatery: wonderful pizza, good ambiance, etc. while we still like the food, the service has gone from good to terrible: in the past year, our takeout order has been wrong (three times: "no onions!" - and we get extra onions), missing items (no salad dressing), or misplaced ("no, we never received that order) every time. service the last two times we ate in has been slow, sloppy (messed up order) and/or indifferent. last night was the last straw: waited 5 minutes to be noticed to get seated; waited at the table for over 10 minutes without having even a drink order taken, and then after we asked someone at the bar, and were told "someone will be right with you," we waited another 5 minutes with no service. and they just shrugged and did not even apologize when we left in annoyance and frustration. we're done! too bad we can't give negative stars.

$32.50. $17.50 for a ok med pizza
$13.00 for a cheese platter

$32 and change. when i mentioned that there might be a mistake, i was told that numbers never lie and had a bill in my face. i just left. i don't mind businesses making money, but $17.50 for a small pizza. it would be helpful to have prices on the website.

i called and place a togo order for a garden salad and a pint of dressing and paid $17+. i had to ask for the dressing that was supposed to come with the salad. when i opened the salad at home i found litte other than brown iceberg lettuce and a pile of cheese. the turkey was missing completely and the other vegetables were sparse. the salad dressing was good but that was the only thing.

a group of us were told about this place and how good their pizza's were. we travelled a ways to get to this specific location in tempe, ordered the skinny pizza. when it arrived it looked very dark/black. we began to eat it and found a lot of charcoal on it (burnt meat)and the crust was too burnt to eat. i informed the waiter and he said it was suppose to be burnt on on top because it was a thick pizza. i asked about the crust being black, as i usually like to eat the crust, he went to the kitchen to check the oven? came back and said it was in an extra 20 seconds but assured me it also was suppose to be black as well. i had to laugh. i wouldn't recommend their skinny pizza to anyone unless you like burnt flavor. (it was really gross)

love the pizza.

any other nellos. i am a nellos fan i have been for years, but this location is incompetent. if you order a $30 pizza your order should be correct. i suggest the ahwatukee location. these people have never had it together.

*the bbq chicken pizza has tomatoes hidden under the cheese (not on the menu) that completely contradicts the bbq sauce. somewhere between a normal pizza and a bbq, not a good mix. other than that good pizza.

good pizza,we had a thin crust w bbq chicken+ and a deep dish(a little doughy, but still tasty. an antipasto sald and their spinach salad both great; lots of micro brews available and friendly waitstaff. take home a bottle of their special house specialty dressing! great place! will return.

my favorite pizza place. i love comming to nellos to have their great deep dish pizza and some good beers which they have on tap. their pastas are equally great (my favorite is the linguini in white clam sauce). i recommend this place for anyone!

dirty bag salad!. for over 20 years i went to the one on alma school rd. and the pizza an salad were always crispy and fresh, the one on southern and mcclintock in tempe sucks bad. the pizza crust was under cooked and the salad was not fresh, it was cheap unwashed bag salad and wilted, the chicken was some over seasoned chicken crap. i will go back to the alma school location, it the food is that bad, i will never go back! a wonder why this place was empty on a friday night!

it's not just the pie, it's the people.. so, nello's is close by in a newly remodeled shopping center on southern and mcclintock.

i like the food. great salad choices (they are huge) and a wonderful house dressing.

we got there at about 8:50p on a tuesday night and they allowed us to order some take-out. perfect for us. everyone was so warm and friendly...very chicago atmosphere. i was offered a beer sample from the san tan brewery and it was so good, i ordered a pint and handed the car keys to my wife.

we also ordered one of their signature pizzas with peppers, onions, mushrooms, pepperoni and sausage.

everything was wonderful. my only comment...and this has been typical of pizza sauce away from where i grew up...we always had a sweeter sauce to start with and then you could add your own pepper flakes to kick up the heat. nello's sauce starts pretty hot already. just a touch to hot for my old gut during the evening. thank goodness for tums.

but, all in all, great meal. we went for dessert before as well and they have great tiramisu.

way to go nello's. we are pleased.

great cheese. my favorite pizza in the valley. not sure what it is but the cheese is always gooey and perfect at nello's.
