my thai restaurant

we'd heard great things about this restaurant, and so turned up here on a friday night for a birthday dinner for 4, with 2 members never having had thai before.

at the end of our meals, 3 thoughts occupied my mind :

 - the food. i have had a lot of thai food in my life, and this has been about as good as it gets. it tasted different to other suburban restaurants, which gave the impression of it being more authentic. it was certainly tasty, and the presentation was amazing. the 2 newbies in our party were very impressed with their respective flavours and became instant fans of the cuisine.

 - the ambience. the building and decor are quite striking. as you enter you are greeted with strong wooden features which culminate in a cathedral ceiling. off to one side there is an impressive feature in the wall, quite large statues with accentuated lighting. the overall lighting in the restaurant was a little too dark; i had to read out the menu items for my parents, who are only in their 60's but still had difficulty reading the menu in the given light.

 - the waitresses. this was the one great negative of the night. 3 of our main dishes came out in good time, but of course all 4 should come out at the same time. it wasn't until we asked one of the girls 5 mins later about the missing dish, that it finally came out. during the meal we had finished the large serving of coconut rice, and requested another one from the waitresses so that we could continue with our meal. we were brought out a small serving of coconut rice. when it came to our table, we informed the girl that we had asked for a large serve. so we waited. and waited. we then decided to just make do with the small coconut rice between the 4 of us. just as we were finishing up with our mains, the large serve of coconut rice came to our table. so now we had this massive portion of coconut rice to get through, with nothing to mix it with.

the waitresses themselves were quite friendly, but the owners of this fine restaurant need to set some procedures and training in place for these girls as the service part of our evening was a bit of a mess.

i’ve been here a couple of times over the years and although it’s more pricey than other thai restaurants, the quality of food is top quality and delicious. nice decor and service, the rice paper roll entree were the nicest rice paper rolls i’ve ever had!

not authentic thai food in my opinion. people who enjoy food here probably haven't been to thailand or tried other thai restaurants in brisbane.

what we ate:
- pineapple rice (it's okay, presentation looked good);
- red curry pork (gravy is tasty but there was a bulk of bamboo shoots in the curry for some reason)
- beef sweet basil (cheap cut of the meat was used, nothing special)
- fried prawns entree (best dish we had, tasted fresh and crunchy)

other:
- busy waitresses but at least the food came quickly
- decor and food presentation looked good
- food is expensive
- we went at 7pm on a wednesday

another thai restarant in brisbane and another thai disappointment for mrs kan do and me, which is a pity considering the excellent zomato ratings, which i can understand to some extent.
the decor which impressed us as we entered is excellent and tastefully thai.
mrs kan do was really in the mood for some tom yum goong (tom yum soup with prawns) and i was in the mood for prawn stir fry with coconut rice. unfortunately due to the white spot disease, prawns were not available so we settled for alternative seafood dishes - a pad thai with mixed seafood and the chef's special 457 - steamed barramundi and vegetables with a 'herbaceous special sauce' which we ordered medium-hot.
the food did not take long to arrive. the pad thai lacked flavour, spicy heat and wok smokiness - three essential elements for this dish. i asked for some extra crushed peanuts and fresh cut chilli with soy sauce which helped the dish along. the seafood was cooked perfectly, but without sufficient flavour this dish rated a 2.5-3.
the steamed barramundi and vegetables was cooked perfectly, but the promised 'herbaceous' mix of lemongrass, green chilli and coriander were mere hints rather than adding a real kick to the dish. i may as well have been eating at a european or australian restaurant, in which case i would have rated the dish higher than the 3 i give it in the context of a thai restaurant.
mrs kan do decided to pick some dessert to pick up our disappointed expectations, and we were having a hard time choosing between the coconut ice cream and the tapioca pudding (sago pudding). our friendly waitress recommended the mixed dessert, which is a shot each of three desserts on the menu, including the coconut ice cream and the sago pudding, and the black sticky rice dessert.
the desserts were all satisfactory but not too amazing. the best of them was the black sticky rice which was served warm and was delicious with the coconut cream. the coconut ice cream was also quite good, although i would have looked more coconut flavour infused by way of coconut cream as well as the shredded coconut throughout the ice cream. the sago pudding was adequate. overall, the mixed dessert rated 3.5-4.
service was impeccable throughout, with friendly and efficient wait staff.
i agree with other reviewers that the restaurant does not compromise on the quality of the ingredients, and there is some skill to the cooking, and therefore you can expect to pay a corresponding price for the dishes.

outstanding thai food. i forgot how good this restaurant was! was going to give them a 5 but didn't because it was soooo hot inside. they seriously need to upgrade the a/c if they want their customers to be comfortable, specially in summer and specially while eating thai. one of the best massaman curries i've had in brisbane. the meat was so tender and the sauce was so complex in flavour and was so creamy and thick. the entire table had to try it and they all agreed. out of all the dishes we ordered, this was the favourite. my second favourite was the prawn we had as an entree. the batter was light and fluffy and the prawns so big and juicy. the servings are huge and the quality of ingredients is high. prices are a bit high but worth it. will be coming back in winter.

opted for the satay skewers, coconut rice, red chicken curry and pad thai, all the staples. i can assure that they did not disappoint! a fantastic classic thai restaurant that is certainly my favourite in brisbane. eat in or takeaway the quality won't change. i wouldn't hesitate if you are looking for something fantastic.

so they pack you in like sardines, but they don't offer sardines on the menu. not that i am complaining, food and service was great but i was craving sardines, cause i am that guy at work who has the stinky lunch (we all know that guy).

considering that i couldn't swing a dead cat in there and i was sure that that same cat wasn't on the menu, we had a great night. food and service was delicious and quick.

is it really worth the wait? don't think so! we made reservations for a friday night , for 2. we arrived on time, the waiter took our drinks and entree order, then ten mins later we had the waitress come up to us to take our order, she didn't even know that we had already ordered entree n drinks. so clearly a miscommunication , you would think if we had two waiting staff looking after us, we would get amazing service, well...we ended up waiting for our mains for at least an hour , and people who came after us got their mains! and to make it worse , after a long wait long , when i asked, the waitress how long our food would take, she responded " do you guys have some where to go??? seriously??? so if we had plans after dinner then you would get us our meals on time??? what happened to customer service ,anyways then she comes back with a tall glass full of ice for our coke, and suggested the ice was to keep our coke cold... whilst waiting for mains that takes an hour !! ice to make up for an hours wait?? plus i had a 1/4 glass of coke ?? seriously? a lil while after we got our mains, the owner comes out from the kitchen to greets the guests, walks to the table before us to check on them and walks past us and talks to the table behind us, r u for real lady???? so after paying $90 , all i get is a glass of ice, and an owner who clearly picks n choose her customers...never coming back!!! poor service! very disappointed customer!!!

came in on a slightly busy wednesday night, service was fine and after ordering, the dishes came to us surprisingly fast! we only waited for around 5 minutes before our first dishes arrived. the spicy fried rice was full of flavour, but it was not very spicy so if you have a spicy tooth, try asking the waitress to increase the spiciness levels. had a duck curry and tofu, these dishes were standard stuff. what stood out was the barramundi. i ordered it from the chefs specials area and boy did it rock my taste buds. the fish was tender and cooked just right with the green curry sauce complementing the fish perfectly. all in all, nice ambience and quick good thai food. will come again to try the other dishes!

drove along haig rd and past the sprout cafe that recalled the episode of the dining experience in this renowned thai restaurant at auchenflower. had a dinner with friends quite a long time ago, my impression of this restaurant was so strong with grand and elegant set-up after-image. it gave me the feeling of having dinner in one of the palace at thailand. foods were traditional and authentic. as i compared it with its sibling "my thai kitchen" down the road. they are just like mother & daughter, this restaurant is just like the mum who covers up all the meals at home and the daughter "my thai kitchen" shows her energetic character to reflect what the mum has taught in a causal way. we should be proud of having these two thai eateries in brisbane.
