beef shabu shabu set - with a cute little pot on a stove with vegetables and tofu, the beef slices and also side dishes of seaweed salad and spring rolls

this place is pretty standard. the shabu shabu concept is cool but the food and service is at an average level. it's a little difficult to eat rice from the tiny square bowl and it's served at such a small quantity that it doesn't nearly fill you up.

the shabu set contains some meat and vegetables for the pot and a bowl of rice. the small plates here is just normal. the chicken wings is ok but he octopus ball is bad.

good food overshadowed by lousy service. i really enjoyed the taste of the food but the staff were really rude. the staff practically threw the food on the table and ran off. it made me feel so uncomfortable. as chinese running a japanese restaurant, they have managed to replicate the japanese flavour but not the polite service.

perfect for a rainy day. i tried their shabu shabu while my friends got a ramen and a udon. they all came in a big portion. remember to try their side dishes as well.

i ate at this restaurant and ordered a chicken teriyaki don, the chicken was cold when it was not supposed to be. this also occurred with another member of our group. the level of service was wanting. i will likely not return.

had a hot pot and the food was average. since it's near uni lodge it's more like a canteen. also it is safer not to expect much since there ain't many japanese restaurants owned by japanese. won't go unless my friend insists.

shabu shabu was a very generous and warming meal, enough to share between two not-so-hungry people with a varied selection of vegies and hearty miso flavour in the vegetable shabu shabu. tuna sashimi was also nice and fresh and the free tea is always a nice touch. service was alright and atmosphere is good!

average food but conveniently located within anu grounds.
i've tried quite a few items on the menu, and nothing really blows my mind.
their rice is rather hit or miss. this time around, it was clear miss. the rice was from the bottom of the pot - clumpy, hard and overcooked. was there with 7 other friends, and everyone had such rice.

for peeps with the idiscount card, they are currently having a promotion where you get 10% off your total bill if you spend more than $40 in a single transaction. do check in store to see when promotion ends.

my love of shabu shabu is no secret, but on this particular visit, a friend and i indulged in dessert there after our reliably delicious beef shabu shabu. there are three icecream flavours on the dessert menu – green tea, black sesame and red bean – all traditional japanese dessert flavours. i picked the black sesame and my friend tried the red bean flavour. the scoops were $3.80 each and came out in a side dish-sized bowl, with one reasonably sized scoop inside. the black sesame scoop was a not-completely-appealing grey colour, but had a really fascinating savoury taste. the icecream was very creamy and at first that hid the sesame flavour, which made an appearance on the back palate at the end of the mouthful. the more i ate, the clearer the flavour became, and whilst it wasn’t as sweet as i expected, my friend preferred that to the sweeter red bean flavour. i tried a bite of the red bean, and actually thought it worked better, the sweet flavour pairing well with the creaminess. the verdict? japanese icecream flavours are an adventure, definitely worth a try with varying sweet-savoury options!

very average food at low prices. food tastes quite bland and flavourless. slightly disappointing for a japanese restaurant. but a good place to eat for lunch.

this was my first visit. i had the prawn tempura udon noodle. the prawn tempura was oily so i could only eat 2 of the 4 on the plate. the broth was very one-dimensional and the udon was gluggy in parts. my better half had the unagi don, which was also very one-dimensional. it had accompaniments of a pickle which was ok, and a springroll with corn kernel inside. i didnt get it and thought it looked sad and waste of space. our third diner had the beef shabu shabu and she looked like she enjoyed it. i had a taste of some broth and a slice of the beef and agreed it was the best of the 3 dishes.

so if you ever find yourself in this place, avoid the prawn tempura udon, the unagi don and go for the beef shabu shabu. i dont know anything about the other dishes and it is highly unlikely i would be going again to find out...
