there’s a tropical paradise roll (pictured, top of the article) described as “mango, strawberry, tobiko, cucumber & avocado topped with tuna, salmon & spicy blueberry sauce.” it’s…frightening. given momiji’s use of cream cheese in other rolls, i’m surprised it’s not in this one; sadly, as with a bad bagel, i can picture blueberried starch topped with cream cheese and salmon.

birthday dinner. went to check out the new momiji restaurant for my husband's birthday. beautiful place , loved the japanese style garden in the middle but the food fell short of my expectation. cilantro and onions in my chirashi? really?. miso shiru with hardly any taste at all and served with a chinese soup spoon? $12.00 for a glass of wine...should i keep going.? not what i expect for a japanese restaurant in any price range. as a japanese person, i was very disappointed that these kinds of dishes are being passed off as "japanese" food.

if you're peering through the window, remember there is more than just the front bar area; it extends to the back where the sushi bar is located. more seating and a small closed off garden seen through glass windows on both sides.

we had no reservations and the only seating at 4pm was the sushi bar which was fine. i love the food entertainment of the sushi men.

the happy hour at momiji is wonderful! the sashimi set was delicious and fresh. the salmon was great. and the free edamame was a really nice added touch. you rarely see that anymore. the only complaint (and maybe this is my fault for not checking in the main menu) is that the seaweed salad on the happy hour menu was not listed as spicy. i can't handle spicy foods and would typically avoid ordering anything that says spicy, so that was an unpleasant surprise.

if you're craving something a little on the lighter side because you've been eating too many christmas cookies, then sushi is the perfect choice. we tried momiji on capital hill during happy hour for our latest night out without the kiddos. the surrounding restaurants and bars looked pretty empty but when we walked into momiji, and without a reservation, the small lobby was filling up fast with people waiting. luckily for us, the wait was only ten minutes and before i knew it we were seated in the dining room. i was happy to see that the happy hour is available throughout the restaurant and not just in the bar area. the space was dark with an upscale and classy feel. the service was fast and accommodating. they have a courtyard behind glass walls in the center of the restaurant that would be great for hanging out at in the warmer months.

this is the newer sib to umi. the layout is very similar, as is the atmosphere. if you like one, you will like the other.  i like both.

i come for the hh and although parking is horrible to get to both places, there are good deals.  there are small assortment plates of sushi, sashimi and/or other items.   it's a nice taste with a beer and if you combo them up, you can make a meal without killing yourself financially.

the plates are well laid out and the fish is fresh.  it's a good time and writing this makes me want to go again.

although i enjoyed their sushi, it wasn't the best in seattle. but, what i will definitely go back for, is their soft shelled crab. wow, crispy, crunchy, yet when i bit into it, it was moist and unbelievably flavorful. the salad dressing offered great flavor, yet didn't overwhelm the salad

bad service. the hostess took my name for a supposed 'list' for a table in the front bar and told us it would be 15 minutes. after 30 minutes of waiting and seeing others who had just arrived get tables, we checked in with her, only to have her defer us to the bartender which would have been another 15 minute wait. terrible system, terrible service.

...king crab tower (on the left, inside a white bowl): this is so refreshing. it’s a cold dish with a nice crunch from the cucumber and caviar, but is mainly mushy, due to the snow crab. packed with avocado, pico de gallo in yuzu citrus ponzu, and cilantro aioli with black tobiko. a swell combination, resulting in a burst of tastiness...

good food, way too noisy. the food was pretty tasty and nicely presented. the restaurant interior looked beautiful, but the noise level was actually painful. i could not enjoy the food or the conversation and felt quite exhausted by the end of the meal—like i feel when i get that seat in the back of the plan by the engine. not a single surface has any sound absorptive material, so the decibel level is really high. my cell phone alarm rang for five minutes during the meal and i did not even hear it. if you like noise, this could be the restaurant for you, but i will not be going back.

thumb up!. my brother and i had just finished our gelato and decided to stroll down the street a bit. so happy to have noticed the charming entrance to momiji! the staff were attentive and personable towards us. the food, especially the spicy tofu, was nicely prepared/presented. the decor is refined but not stuffy and not pretentious.
