ate there tonight for my second time. first time had sausage & red beans. it was good. tonight my sweetie and i had fried chicken and bbq ribs, mac & cheese, potato salad, and black-eyed peas. cornbread comes with the meal and we also ordered soul rolls. the chicken was ok, nothing extraordinary. price's is much better. the cornbread and the soul rolls were excellent and worth another visit. the other sides were not remarkable. mert's was packed tonight, but the service was still fairly good. overall, the joint is ok, not great.

it was awesome for us. hmmm well the reviews are all over the place but our experience was this..great! great waitress, place was packed but we were treated like we were the only ones in the place. food was awesome, creole shrimp, sweet potato pancakes, ribs, salmon cakes and pound cake to go! our bill was low compared to other times dining out. we are a family of 5. i love reviews however you have to try things for yourself..

great food and atmosphere. service was not the best but not horrible. the cornbread, collard greens, potato salad, okra, yams, carolina bbq plate/sandwich and soul rolls were good. my wife liked her blackened pork chops but i found they were not seasoned well. both the chocolate and sweet potato cakes were good.

overrated. obviously they are doing something right for someone but not for me. the shrimp and grits i received on my last visit were terrible. for decent soul/comfort food i go to the chicken box cafe, nana's, united house of prayer, or dish. i don't know why mert's keeps getting the best of award from cl.

all i can say is ew.... first off let me just say that i love soul food and as an african american woman in the south, i expected this to meet expectations but it did not! i called 45 min ahead of time of picking up my order and asked if they can make it ready in 30 when my initial time was 15. but guess what?! i still ended up waiting even though i gave them 15 add'l min!! then when inquiring about the cake that they had, the lady starts hacking in front of me like she's about to lose a lung! like gross! then when i finally get my food, i get back to work and my red beans are all over my chckn wings and mac n cheese! i was sooooo mad! then to make matters worse, my meal was the biggest plate of seasonless food i have ever consumed! it was so bland, it was ridiculous! smh never again!

the food was horrible i will never eat there again in life. i tried to call them and i left my phone number thay never called. i spent $62.xx but never again.

so so ... very over rated. don't get me wrong. it's a nice place and the service is good and friendly but the food has a long way to go.

my wife and i drove into charlotte ot give them a try. my wife ordered a grilled chicken salad while i stuck with one of the brunch specials, chicken and waffles. being a soul food restaurant, what could be better?

given that my wife liked her salad, my chicken and waffles left much to be desired. both the waffle and the chicken were grossly overcooked. the waffle was very dense in texture with no height to it at all. in other words, it was very flat. it was also cooked to almost a very dark brown.

the corn bread is very good but they may want to cut back a bit on the sugar so that it tastes a bit less like cake. still very good, warm with butter on it.

chicken was very tough and dry with a very hard crust on the outside. you definatey needed a knife to cut these babies.

being on almost a diagonal from the performing arts centers, the decor is rich in posters from off broadway shows. it's a nice decor and very homey. as i mentioned earlier, service is good although i would have liked a refill on my tea at some point.

at some point, i'll give them another try but right now, restaurant did not live up to my expectations or their reviews.

this was not only the best food i've had in charlotte, nc but maybe some of the best soul food i've had ever! the service was excellent and our waitress latosha was so phenomenal it was a true delight. the atmosphere was equally as wonderful as the service and meal. you must save room for the banana pudding

it lived up to my expectations; the barbecue was as good as i’ve ever had and the boys had to fight me over the mac and cheese. with some of the friendliest service in addition to delicious food, this is a must-visit restaurant if you’re ever in charlotte.

merts. i've only purchased cornbread here, and its really good....only when its fresh.

another must in the great city of charlotte. the atmosphere is great and the food is even better. try the carolina chopped bbq!

scramble eggs were runny. service was terrible. chicken was good so were the home fries.

love it. my mom used to work here and i grew up eating there food and excellent cakes the people are so friendly and they have the best collard greens, cornbread, and macaroni i love everything about that place!

i had beef ribs and fries chicken i thought the leg and thigh quarter was from a pigeon the i wouldn't even call them beef ribs it was bones with sauce

i had the rib and chicken combo i jab better chicken at bojangles the ribs where just bones with bbq sauce on it it was not what i expected

got there about 430 saturday. perfect timing because it started to get super busy around 5. pleasant staff. clean restaurant. food was very good. cornbread very tasty. fave was black eyed peas,fried green tomatoes,sweet tea,and yams. super tasty. n nice atmosphere overall!
