if i was basing the review solely on food, i would be five stars for sure! all of us ordered different types of burgers, sides, and drinks - and everything tasted great! burgers were cooked perfectly with delicious toppings and freshly made pickles. shakes were yummy (although they seemed to have a lot of whipped cream). service was decent. my only issue was that for three people to eat a burger, side, and shake each, it was $90 after the tip. the price seems a little steep.

residing in corktown, detroit, on michigan ave, mercury burger & bar is one of those places that you must visit. a neighbor of slow’s bbq and mudgie’s deli, mercury burger & bar is adding it’s own flare to burgers. they have amped up some favorites by putting their own spin on fresh ingredients. the menu includes burgers, hot dogs, shakes, and hand cut fries. what goes best with a burger? yep, you guessed it, beer! it is a bar after all, so mercury offers a full bar including beer and liquor. see how they ranked.

if you ask a newcomer to detroit where to get burgers, or consult yelp, you may get recommendations for mercury. this corktown restaurant has been open for a couple years now, and certainly fit in with the small but growing neighborhood of restaurants and stores collecting in this area of new detroit. as everyone who has tried to go to slow’s knows, it is packed. you’re going to have to wait. dealing with this wait time usually includes heading over to astro coffee for a great pourover cup, sugar house for a well-crafted cocktail, or to mercury if your hunger is immense. i believe the slow’s overflow brings them a lot of business, and they have the capacity to take advantage of it.

i quickly narrowed my burger choices down to one or two. the one i eventually selected was the southwest detroit burger. this burger came topped with a chorizo slider, jalapenos, muenster cheese, tortilla strips, avocados (i left this off), and something called zanahorias…or pickled spiced carrots plus it had the usual accouterments of lettuce, tomato, onion, and pickles. this burger was good. i mean, this burger was damn good. the meat itself had a slightly pink center and a char-grilled crust. the chorizo patty was pretty damn amazing. it was just about as big as the burger and it just had that warm, spicy, feel to it. everything else was just icing on the cake to this burger. i could have eaten just with the beef and chorizo,so the rest of the toppings just added to that already deliciousness that i couldn’t put down long enough to breath.

terrible area, never returning!. i was born there in 1957 and live in the suburbs about 15 miles away. i have always been one to "stick up" for detroit and it's revitalization.

no longer. my conclusion is that it is a hopeless pit that i will make great efforts to stay away from.

this sunday evening after a long day of yard work i was craving a couple of good coney dogs and had heard that the mercury bar was a good place to relax and get just that. my wife and i decided to pay it a visit. it is on michigan avenue across the street from sloe's, near the old train station. we arrived and drove around a couple of minutes to try to find a parking place. after a couple of loops we parked in a goodyear auto service lot one block away. it was closed, there were some spaces and no signs saying we could not park there.

we got inside and were seated in the basement but after about 15 minutes (we still hadn't even received a drink) the restroom smell chased us upstairs to the bar. i must admit the coneys were exactly what i wanted and my wife said that her burger was very good also. after about an hour we finished our meal and left. as we approached the parking lot we saw that our vehicle was gone. it was locked and there were also some personal items in it. we noticed broken glass where it had been parked and came to the conclusion that it had been stolen. we returned to mercury bar to contact the police and wait for a ride. i was on hold with detroit police for at least 15 minutes. while we waited the barmaid told us that someone had also broken in to her car recently so we came to the conclusion that these things happen often in this neighborhood.

i do not believe the b.s. about what a great little neighborhood corktown is ...or detroit for that matter. the government/business leaders that preach how we should all come down and enjoy detroit largely have special parking areas where they don't have to be exposed to the problems that the average detroit visitor is. they do business, have dinner, see a game and go home while their vehicles are in guarded or enclosed areas.

i am 57 years old and have had my first vehicle stolen in one of detroit's "upcoming gem" neighborhoods. i can guarantee that won't happen again. a stolen vehicle and the thought of higher insurance premiums are not worth a couple of chili dogs...or a filet for that matter!

great burgers, good boston coolers. after passing this place lots of times, it's a shame i hadn't come here sooner.

the weather was sunny and bright with moderate sept temps, and we wanted to sit on the patio, but they weren't seating anyone out there "due to the bees". interesting.

we were seated in the basement -- in the corner closest to the kitchen -- where wafts of dirty dishwater aromas greeted my nose just often enough to remind me to never sit there again. the decor is spartan, with what appear to be salvaged dps chairs for seating. i liked the wood staircase, very nice.

the service was fast and friendly; very no-nonsense. each of us ordered a burger and three of us ordered a boston cooler. the food came out in good time and the burgers were all delicious -- the beef used was good quality -- and the toppings were plentiful and fresh. fries were hot and good. everyone enjoyed their meal. i got the shroom burger: delicious!

at a price of $5.50, i was expecting a little more from the boston cooler (all shakes are the same price). but it came in the same size glass as what they put soda or water into, and with an inch of vernor's/ice cream foam on top, it wasn't enough -- especially at that price. while creamy and delicious, it wasn't so delicious -- and at that price the value is not compelling -- that i would order another when i go back. (although a faygo orange creamsicle shake sounds tempting!) maybe since the burgers are so inexpensive they try to make up for it in drinks.

overall seems like a great place; next time i'll try something different on the menu.

i love this place! i had a major poutine craving so we ended up going there. loved the atmosphere and the service was great- casual and friendly and prompt. the poutine tots are awesome. i'm not a huge fan of burgers so i get the dogs and love them (though the buns could use some improvement). my husband loves the burgers there and there's lots of great options. and it's nice that it's open late, one of the few good places around that is.
two smaller complaints- they're a bit inconsistent. one night our poutine has lots of gravy the other night it has hardly any, the music can be really loud rock or much quieter indie music, the burger is loaded with extras on one night but not on another. strange because we've only gone on saturday nights .
and we've had a very uninformed waitress- told me my dog was on a poppyseed bun when it wasn't, said the faygo was cold when it wasn't, etc. but hey, she may have been new so whatevs.
again, small complaints and won't stop me from going because i just love their food and atmosphere. definitely a must try.

hit or miss. usually a miss. floor staff is super friendly. bar staff are always overwhelmed and ignore customers after the order has been taken and food served. and i would say that they must go through chefs like a revolving door. this could only account for the reason burgers are never cooked to order :well, medium, rare. and not seasoned. there's always food in the water.

excellent burgers. we went after a tiger's game with my in-laws and it took a little while for a server to come around, but when he did, he was very friendly. we ordered shakes and i thought it was nice that he told us they take a little while since they hand scoop the ice cream and make them in an area downstairs and we were happy to wait. we all ordered a different burger and my husband and i split the tots. we were all incredibly full after, but it's a great spot for a good burger with friends or family.

best burger. i've eaten a lot of burgers in my life at a lot of different burger joints all throughout michigan and various parts of the country. the blue apple burger (bleu cheese, applewood bacon) is the best burger i've every put in my mouth, ever. from the bun, to the toppings, to the expertly seasoned and prepared patty, the entire thing melts together in a perfect balance where you can make out the individual flavors, but the combination is distinct, unique, and terrific. very nicely done. oh, you mean to say i haven't mentioned the fries yet? not sure how that's possible. the fries are also out-of-this-world. i've sampled fries on the same spectrum as burgers and these are some of the best i've ever had as well -- crispy outside, perfectly seasoned, tender and flavorful on the inside with a distinct potato flavor -- the only fries i can think of that are in the ballpark here are in-n-out, crack fries at hopcat in gr, or the fries at stella's in gr; but, that's a short, and very distinguished list.

as an early entrant into the re-burgeoning corktown neighborhood, mercury is bound to become a neighborhood staple (to the extent it's not already) and get increasingly crowded. if you're in the mood for a burger, fries, and beer (with a beer list dominated by michigan craft beef), do yourself a favor and go now before it becomes absolutely impossible to get a seat.
