the difference that sets this apart from other restaurants is attention to detail. the chips and salsa are warm and fresh. the tortias are abundantly served alongside the chips. the water tastes clean. the walls and other surfaces are dusted and clean.

the family farm i grew up on in texas has been in the family since 1895, i grew up eating tortillas just about as often as i ate biscuits and gravy. so what does that have to do with mercado juarez?

three (going on four) generations of my family have eaten here (they say 25 years on the website, closer to 30 or 35 by my reckoning). make no mistake, this isn't mexican food, this is tex-mex... and it's some of the best. by tex-mex i mean beef, i mean lots of melted yellow cheese, beans, spices (which includes stuff like cumin), etc. a little bit old san antonio and a whole lot of gringo.

what mercado juarez does just about better than anybody is the meat. the fajitas are good, the carne asada is great, the carnitas are incredible. they also make just about my favorite refried beans in the state - they use all the right spices.

if you're going for the enchiladas, tamales, or other carb heavy tex-mex "staples" - mercado juarez is about as good as any other. go for the meat dishes, that's what's best there.

the tortillas, guacamole, chips ,dip, etc. and all the side dishes are just average, nothing special. for dessert, be sure to grab some of the flan before you head out the door.

ps - avoid the crapitude calling itself mercado juarez in arlington. they may be franchise locations but compared to the dallas location... no contest. they really should have different names. forth worth location also isn't as good as it used to be.

texmex but not authentic. i might be spoiled eating authentic mexican food so i didn't like this place although i did like the big tree in the middle of the place. nice looking but didn't like the food. maybe good for tourists.
