change is the only constant. well, not necessarily. visiting the original mavalli tiffin room is nostalgic and pure time travel without a time machine.
read about the place, be fully aware about its legacy, authenticity and visit with an open mind. don't come here with misplaced expectations.
must try :
masala dosa
gulab jamun
coffee
puri sagoo
by 8:30am puri sagoo was already over, so we settled with the famous dosa. it came with a small katori of ghee. poured it generously all over the dosa and the rest is history. the taste of the dosa is unique and delicious. you need to have an acquired taste for it.

the coffee is still served in silver lota and tastes like pure joy.

mtr was a legend, though only once upon a time. the quality, service and taste levels are just not upto the mark. the 'masala' in the masala dosa is the worst. skip the lines and head to many new options.

what a huge disappointment. i'm usually always a fan of iconic spots but this was a terrible let down. we got here at around 9am, easily got a seat, the waiter took 30mins to take our order and yet, didn't bring us what we ordered sadly. the vada dip came 25mins after ordering, too salty, kinda weird, sambhar wasn't great. the masala dosa came 45mins after ordering, mediocre. meh. idlis had run out so we ordered rava idli, which never made it to our table. the waiters will see you waiving, make full eye contact and not come to table. they're very comfortable standing around and doing nothing. service is absolutely pathetic which is shocking. the only saviour was their coffee, absolutely brilliant. apart from that, big no.

food: 3/5
service: -5/5
ambience: 4.5/5
value for money: 4/5

food, service & ambience... all need an upgrade.

we waited 25 minutes and then found out that they had already run out of regular idlis - by 8:30am; the masala dosa was oily with some kind of green chutney inside; and the coffee was bitter. there are so many better options for south indian tiffin in bangalore...

horrible experience. other mtrs are much better. dining experience was horrible. looks old and dingy. water served with hair. dosa was over cooked hence the bitter taste. chutney was old. no sambar served. jamoon had an unedible essence. fruit cream also had an essence. mtr kamanahalli serves way way way better. would never come back to the so called original first mtr. 😡

well, one of the most legendary and renowned south indian restaurants in bengaluru, mtr!

i ordered the rava idli, ghee roast dosa and coffee. the rava idli was simply outstanding, one of the best i have had! dosa and coffee were okay for me, as i feel i have had better at other legendary outlets. overall a good hygienic place with polite service and an authentic south indian feel. do give a try.

highly overpriced, average taste, dirty place. avoid at all cost. visit any other nearby south indian restaurant instead. i liked indira nagar mtr and had similar expectations, but disappointed.

this mtr at lal bagh opens at 6:00 am in the morning and it's difficult to find a place to sit if you go at 6:05! this is the craze for this place.

authentic south indian dosa, idlis, khara bhaat, etc. if you're looking for a breakfast option at 6 in the morning, then this is the place to go. it won't disappoint you!

breakfast joint - authentic south indian food at lalbagh road, adjacent to urvashi theatre 😋
'
'
crispy malasa dose - with ghee and chutney ,
rava idli - saggu (sabji) was just too good,
chandra haara and gulab jamoon - too sweet but must try for dessert lovers
coffee - perfect way to drink

place- established in 1924, it is one of the oldest and well known restaurant. too crowded on weekends, almost takes an hour for average of 6 people to get a table. but worth the wait.

a very old outlet making products which is consumed all over india . their food is no way less than the quality of products they sell. the dosas is out of the world. crunchy buttery served with some extra ghee which gives the dosa an extra punch. very near to lalbagh and psk and worth visiting

this is the first mtr and quite iconic in that sense. a simple no frills place, it is quite spacious. it was quite crowded even at 5 in the evening.

the menu is very limited, we went for their special rava idli which was supposedly invented here and a thupa dosa. the idli was light and airy and the dosa was crisp and full of ghee. loved them both. since everyone was having the gulab jamun, we went for that too and boy what a good idea that was..it was simply delicious ! the fruit custard we ordered along with it could not match up to it.

service was a little slow and all of this plus a coffee came to around inr 400.

me and my friend had an unfulfilled desire since a long time to visit the oldest mtr in bangalore which finally came to fruition. we targeted breakfast at around 7:30 am on sunday. there was a huge crowd which is quite usual here with people bustling in and out. we gave our names and waited for around 20 mins until the table was ready. there's a waiting area inside the restaurant too. we had the plain dosa and tea which was really good. they have a serving of butter on the side which was nice. there were limited options for the breakfast though with around 4 items for food and 4 for beverages/drinks. we had a lovely time and the charm of the place made it a really good experience for me.
