maneki neko: great kitchen food, decent sushi. the first impression i got walking through the doors to maneki neko: "wow. charming!" the presentation is almost overwhelming; the walls are painted gold and red, and there are tiny glass kittens (maneko nekos are "lucky cats" in japanese lore) decorating the restaurant.

the service staff is very competent and responsive--refills are quick, the time from ordering until you get your food isn't long, and your appetizers are brought out first. i'm guessing it's just "japanese politeness," but the waitresses are a little too quiet for my tastes. the sushi chefs at the bar energetically great you as you enter, though: "irrashaimase!"

most japanese places around falls church seem to focus on sushi; maneki shines brightest in their kitchen entrees, which is a huge plus as someone that doesn't care much for sushi. i've found maneki's appetizers and entrees (especially the gyouza, teriyaki chicken and tonkatsu) far better than their competition in the area.

as i said, i'm not much of a sushi fan--but my group of friends is, and they say maneki's sushi is good, but nothing to write home about. but if you're looking for authentic japanese kitchen food, look no further.

we found manekineko one day when the power went out, and have loved it ever since we have never been disapponted by a meal. come here and you will not regret it.

i have visited here multiple times and i have been impressed. the owner is a chef trained in japan. as a result, the food is quite authentic. i have sushi, miso soup, and a rice dish; i have enjoyed all the dishes.

tao is the only guy in the neighborhood who will do custom nikiri sauce. everyone else is just the house soy sauce

the service and location were nice. i went for lunch and the chicken was way overcooked. it smelt like burnt food from a bbq. i could not finish my meal because it was so distasteful.

you can tell this place is a cut above other sushi places by looking at the daily menu and the reg menu and you find fish and other delicacies you've never tried. thirty years in this city and this small warm place is just so nice. nice to find a place that doesn't hide poor quality under too much mayo or sauce. and sake is cold!

outstanding japanese food. grade: a-

tao, the owner and sushi chef, gets some exceptional fish, including a number of kinds from the famed tsukiji market in tokyo. there is a full range of japanese cuisine, including noodle dishes, donburi bowls, and tempura. all are excellent. there are even a few things from tao's native okinawa. excellent specials, too. after a few visits, you get treated like family. great experience!

good. the food was exceptional and moderately priced. they have $1 select nigri sushi mon-thurs. if you eat at the bar you'll be entertained by the head sushi chef.
