deep fried tofu with minced chicken...tofu was deliciously unique- it was extremely soft and silky...the sauce and the vegetables were a great accompaniment

i had heard good reviews about malacca straits and it didn't disappoint, once you find the restaurant basically hidden inside a residential apartment. i ordered the penang kapitan, which is a chicken curry very different to your thai curries, it was thick and you could taste every herb. we also ordered crying tiger which was my favorite but not a large dish so it disappeared in a couple of minutes. i didn't find the restaurant overly spicy and probably would of liked a bit more chilli in my dishes, plus they served us our roti after we had eaten our mains. overall the food is decent, very affordable and recommended if you are heading to the movies at broadway.

after a great massive feast at a friend's event, my wife and i headed to the city. though our tummies were full from lunch, we were still keen to explore this humble malaysian restaurant. my friends at work have been raving about it, so we had to finally try it. on mountain street., we walked towards parramatta road and came across the restaurant sign on the left hand side of the street. it directed us to a courtyard and the restaurant was at the right hand corner. satay chicken roti canai we sat down and went through the menu which had all-time malaysian favourites (and some thai dishes). we settled for four savoury dishes: the roti canai with curry dip, satay chicken, nasi goreng, and the assam ikan. all the dishes were nice but two stood out, the nasi goreng and assam ikan. nasi goreng

this little gem is hidden inside the quadrant building... service was quick and reasonable. first up was the char kway teow, nicely done with crispy bean sprout and greens, egg cooked by the side of the noodles then mixed in, noodles tender with that mild burnt favor (wok hie – heat) and a dollop of sambal on the side. you get to choose vege, chicken, prawns or seafood. nasi lemak, nicely presented.

food has an interesting aftertaste and is priced cheaper than other places but still quite expensively. however, given the size of the food, that's fair enough.

in terms of service, if you look asian, the staff will speak to you in chinese and will continue to assume that you're chinese or knowledgeable in the chinese language. it's pretty crass and insensitive when you explicitly but politely tell them you're not chinese or you don't know chinese.

ambience is okay. it isn't anything to write home about. fortunately for malacca straits, the restaurant is located near tons of apartments and near universities, so there's bound to be students regardless.

all in all, we probably wouldn't visit again as there are restaurants with better service, better thai and malaysian fare, and better ambience. however, we can't complain in that it's an okay place for a quick feed at an affordable price.

very disappointed experience!! according to staff, chef tan no longer heads the kitchen.

the manager/guy behind the counter collecting the money was rude and not fit to be in the food and beverage business. he was argumentative with the customer, not courteous and polite to customer criticism.

we had the "wat tan hor (kway teow siram) 16.80" to start. this was ok nothing special. you can get the same dish at other malaysian establishments. dish was a little on the small side and lacking seafood (only one prawn).

for mains we ordered fish head curry, kam heong prawns, baby squid sambal and eggplant salted fish.

the fish head curry, i felt cheated it was not a fish head curry. no fish head to be seen in the curry. the menu said fish head curry and you will not get fish head curry. this is blatant false advertising selling fish head curry on the menu when it is clearly no fish head in the curry.

when we asked the manage/guy collecting the money, he was defensive and rude to us. he was stating that 90% of their customers do not like the bones of the fish head. basically i don't see how this is our concern. we ordered fish head curry and did not get it.

as for the rest of the dishes it was good but still a little expensive for the type of restaurant it is (looks more like lunch time take away place).

proper chinese/malaysian restaurants do not charge the amount found at malacca straits on broadway.

i will not go there again. i can get similar or better quality malaysian food elsewhere. why go to a subpar establishments for rude service and mediocre food.

a total fan with its central location, encased in the broadway quadrant makes this particular venue a favorite to work at when on the road. it was originally the pandan dessert ($10) that got my attention.   the beef rendang is perfectly how i like it ($16.80 ) and it’s the third one in the area sampled this week which is so far hands down one of the memorable ones.

good food, bad service. the staff constantly run around loudly and even run away from you before you’ve finished your order. maybe that was why they brought me chicken instead of beef rendang. the chicken was great though, tender meat in a sauce that seemed mild at first but built up a good flavour. the roti canai was ok, just a tiny bit soggy. definitely beats most roti-and-curry options in sydney but also cost more than other options.

⭐️⭐️⭐️3.5 stars

ordered seafood laksa ($13.90), hainan chicken ($12), pandan crepe ($6) and mixed entree ($6). service was a little rough and quite slow. the food was okay, it hit the spot but i've had better versions of the dishes we ordered elsewhere. maybe my expectations were too high but also because i've had some outstanding malaysian before. i wouldn't recommend the curry puff or the pandan crepe, but all the main dishes were good. the meat portion for the hainan chicken was quite small though so i had a lot of rice leftover :(

wow we order ordered three very good dishes! kow tiao with big juicy prawns, vege tomyum soup that activates your taste buds! strongly recommend golden sand fried eggplant (they do prawns and pumpkins too). the portion is big and it is super exotic with salted egg and curry leaves. xihuahua 🐶 shouted since she got her pay of the month.

excellent and efficient service. the nasi lemak served with chicken curry and the roti served with beef rendang were amazing. the lamb ribs were over cooked and oily - hence i scored 4 stars.

very fast service, the place is very close to my workplace so it's very convenient. i went at 1pm and it was busy! that's a good sign. i had their panang curry, the portion is a little small but it was quite tasty. would come back as i want to try their laksa and other dishes

i ordered fried meehoon for myself and half hainanese chicken for my husband with two drinks.
food taste was ok.
the downside of it was the serve of half chicken was two maryland, without asking if it’s ok to serve that instead of breast with the maryland.
my husband would only eat breast meat so he didn’t eat the chicken :(
when asking the lady, she said sometime they serve two maryland to make it half serve chicken. the problem is without asking the customer. i could have order other food if i know it would be two maryland. she said next time i need to tell her if i want the breast meat. sigh. description shouldn’t have half chicken. i try asking if i could get two breasts next time since they serve two maryland to me today, she said no.
