a set menu that's a pleasing surprise, though i wish one could a la carte some of the dishes. when you arrive to the restaurant, you step down into a whole new world (middle east i think), leaving the bustle of bond street behind. as far as initial impressions go, this place hits a home run. though the clientele acceptance includes a nice shirt and jeans, one almost feels like they should be donning a suit (or a fine dress). anyways, onto the food. your only option is the number of set courses (2,4,5 or 6). limited to be 2 hour block, we chose the 4 course sampler, and was pleasantly surprised. the 'spice journey soufra' starts off with a sample of cured swordfish, spiced chicken wings, a deep fried pumpkin dish, cauliflower hummus with mince and some olives. mixed bag, with the pumpkin and chicken wings being the winners whilst the others could be passed. course 2 was a little better with the duck and beef offering. the duck was in a lovely pastry that just seemed to melt on your tongue, whilst the beef was a lesson in look and taste conduction. but all in all, relatively pleasing. course 3 was the mains, containing the rockling and the signature 12 hour roasted lamb shoulder, served with a side of fattoush and pilaf. to be honest, whilst extremely tender, the lamb was good but felt like it was missing some juices to offset the dryness of the lamb. maybe it'll depend on if the fattoush or pilaf is your thing but i think i'd prefer the one at cumulus instead. anyways, still relatively content, we moved into course 4 (dessert sample). on offer is the turkish delight donuts, the pedro ximenez cake and the halva parfait, with the winner clearly being the cake slice. overall, the experience was good and we were left needing to be rolled out, which is always a plus. suppose it depends on if you like the set menu approach or not as to how you rate this place. overall, i'd say it's good and worth trying. but check it out yourself, as this ain't no baseline!
