i love lucy. how can you not love lucy?
i suppose you could just not know her. but those of use who have discovered her vietnamese-style grilled chicken hoagies (bánh mì gà) are more than happy to be seeing the old woman's smile once again. when her brother sold the restaurant last year, lucy went to help her daughter start a restaurant in nyc (or perhaps it was boston). but she's back, now in front of the firehouse lounge on penn avenue, just a few blocks from her old location.
for those unfamiliar, a vietnamese-style hoagie includes fresh herbs, pickled vegetables and slices of hot peppers. lucy's sauce is a kind of sweet vinegrette. for $5, you can hardly beat it for price or quality.
and as i alluded to earlier, lucy is a genuine person who cares about the people around her. i once asked if she had considered retiring, but she said she would miss her customers too much.
