i love lucy. how can you not love lucy?

i suppose you could just not know her. but those of use who have discovered her vietnamese-style grilled chicken hoagies (bánh mì gà) are more than happy to be seeing the old woman's smile once again. when her brother sold the restaurant last year, lucy went to help her daughter start a restaurant in nyc (or perhaps it was boston). but she's back, now in front of the firehouse lounge on penn avenue, just a few blocks from her old location.

for those unfamiliar, a vietnamese-style hoagie includes fresh herbs, pickled vegetables and slices of hot peppers. lucy's sauce is a kind of sweet vinegrette. for $5, you can hardly beat it for price or quality.

and as i alluded to earlier, lucy is a genuine person who cares about the people around her. i once asked if she had considered retiring, but she said she would miss her customers too much.

fantastic flavors. for $6 you get a spicy and savory sandwich (banh mi). fresh french baguette with cucumber, cilantro, radish, pickled onion and carrot with a sweet sticky sauce. what else could you ask for?

just look for lucy under the awning in the parking lot next to the restaurant/bar that is currently bar marco.

what an amazing sandwich!. i have walked past lucy for years and always meant to try a sandwich. i've had several people tell me how good they were. they didn't tell me loud enough.
you need to stop here and get a sandwich.
i got a tofu but she has grilled meats also. she asked me if i wanted everything on it and i said "sure."
she drizzled a little sauce on my tofu and then put on pickled carrots and pickled onions. then hot peppers and roughly chopped cilantro. it smelled so good i didn't get 2 steps without taking a bite and then i had to sit on the sidewalk and finish it.
absolutely one of the best sandwiches i have ever had. and i'm a sandwich man. everything was perfect.

lucy's sandwich was where i first fell in love with bahn mi. her sandwich is a combination of great flavors, & works very well. sometimes it can get messy, but absolutely worth it.

banh mi deluxe. i love the layers of flavor this sandwich brings, cucumber, crispy grilled chicken, cilantro, the pickled veggies, and the sauce. have to have a weekly fix on a deliscious baguette. price is $6 now but still the best deal in the burgh. just outside the firehouse lounge....don't miss this sandwich!

the taste is great but there was too much bread for me. either more ingredients or less bread.

real flavor cheap. nice lady, really good sandwich, and cheap. this is one of the few places in the strip that hasn't raised prices to disney levels while chiseling the portions greedily ripping off the tourists.

i decided to try one of lucy's banh mi because i had heard good things before. the sandwich consisted of grilled chicken, carrots, pickled red onions, cucumbers, jalapeno peppers, and cilantro inside a french baguette, and it was absolutely rave-worthy!

after saying our goodbyes and thanks to david, we walked outside -- and as usual, lucy's banh mi tent was set up just outside of the doors of the restaurant. banh mi is a simple vietnamese sandwich, often sold as street food, with a variety of ingredients.

heard today lucy sets up in front of the old fire house now. walked about 2 miles from the north shore to get her famous sandwich. was not disappointed. the chicken was freshly grilled and the pickled carrot, cucumber, jalapeno and sauce add the right amount of flavor. the mancini brrad has the right crusty taste. best banh mi in pittsburgh. will be back on the weekend :)
