breakfast is best. this restaurant is around the corner from my house, and i've been eating here off and on for 30 years.
the new owners (c.2002) did a fantastic job of investing in the property. it had become a dump, and now it's totally renovated and modernized.
breakfast is the best thing on the menu. they heavily promote the biscuits, but the biscuit quality is uneven because each batch is handmade. one batch can be delicious and the next batch tough (not enough shortening). and, if business is slow, the biscuits can be an hour or two old.
after spending more than a million dollars (literally) renovating the place, the owners were apparently having trouble making a profit. the menu was abbreviated several years ago, and the quality of some ingredients (bacon, for example) was apparently cut to save money. grits are often thin and runny, a classic sign of trying to extend their volume and standing time by adding water.
lunch and dinner fare is decidedly mediocre, depending primarily on the fried chicken. breakfast is available all day. for vegetables, the cracker barrel chain is better.
the loveless would be better if it would invest some of the marketing money into improving the food quality, especially the non-breakfast choices.
nonetheless, it's a fun place for a group and a memorable stop for tourists. the loveless is about the experience as much as it's about the food, and you won't be disappointed in that regard. plus, you won't be hungry when you leave.
