little hanoi

made the mistake of getting the salmon salad which tasted like it was smothered in vinegar. tried my friends rice dish and it tasted like it was smothered in white pepper. redeeming factor: there was a funny sign on the toilet door. overall, would not recommend.

lovely little restaurant hidden in the back corner of left bank. got the rare beef pho noodle soup for lunch and absolutely loved it! meat cooked perfectly and came out in under 10 minutes. my friend got the chicken pad thai which was delicious and very fulling, had to get a doggy bag to take it home. would definitely come back here.

we, three women in late 30s, dined on saturday night. busy. we came away thinking that the food was perhaps ok, but the waiting service and communication was very bad. here is an interaction summary.

starters.

us: "spring roll and fried chicken wings please, and two of us do not eat coriander, please no coriander in food. please no coriander in food, but please put a bit on a side dish"

waiter: "no problem"

what arrived was 1 spring roll (as ordered) and 1 deep fried spring roll. the ordered raw spring roll had coriander in it and there was no side dish.

us: "we didnt order this deep fried spring roll".

waiter: "we are out of chicken wings. this deep fried pork spring roll is delicious. you should try it."

us: "no. we dont want it thank you, (waiter takes away) but, hold on hold on.. can we keep that dipping sauce?" (2 different dipping sauces had come to the table)

waiter: "no. this dipping sauce is not for raw roll"

we didnt get to keep the dipping sauce.

mains

us: "beef salad, rare beef pho bo (no coriander please!!), and a vietnamese crepe please."

waiter: "no problem."

what arrived was perfectly a good beef salad, pho with coriander (we could pick it off), but no crepe for me. my friends had eaten their meals by the time i reminded staff i was waiting for crepe...which promptly arrived...half off the plate...it look like it was made as an after thought...an "absolutely no time to make it" meal..but importantly it was yummy.

so please take what you will from review. we think its important to have good communication between customers and kitchen...so perhaps give your waiters a bit of training?

little hanoi is one of left-bank's best kept secrets. i think that oriental and satay kingdom are much more well known, however this place is only 20 metres away or so and also offers great prices and, in my opinion, even better food! my friend and i had plate upon plate of their rice paper rolls. they were simply delicious and made fresh to order, and at $8 for a plate of 3 big ones you can't go wrong! the prawn ones are my favourite, though i would happily eat any. i also tried the fried chicken entree, which again was reasonably priced and delectable. if you are sick of the food at oriental kingdom i would highly recommend venturing a bit further along left-bank to this place!

oh yeah!!! this place is pretty authentic. had a lot of pho in my time and this place does a pretty legit bowl of rare beef noodle soup. i think i fell in love mainly because of the generous amount of spring onion and the hefty good punch of pepper on the top. if you're not so good with pepper i recommend that you ask for less. slightly disappointed i hadn't dined sooner, yet delighted i have yet to eat my way around the menu!

this pl is tucked down left bank and is fairly empty at lunch - this is 1 of the best vietnamese places in welly - if you want a reasonably priced meal with a homely comfort food feel.
sometimes only 1 person working so can be slow. generous portions with loads of flavour. recommend the chicken bamboo noodle soup - ask for extra lemon 🍋.

went for dinner on friday night. there were only a couple of tables occupied. its not a fancy looking restaurant but one of the best vietnamese restaurants ive tried. had cooked beef noodle soup and it was really yummy. me and my friend enjoyed. highly recommended.

looking for that amazing, authentic, little asian ‘hidden gem’? little hanoi might not look like much from the outside, but the food is absolutely incredible 😋😍🤯 mind-blown! super delicious broth with the clarity of every herb tantalising your taste buds. order “pho bo”. ask for the picked garlic and don’t be afraid to add it (including the juices) to the soup for that extra zing! best beef noodle soup i’ve ever had (given i have not yet visited vietnam). i make it my personal endeavour to visit little hanoi every time i’m in wellington.

with a full, happy stomach, take a stroll across the road and find a special copy of your favourite novel at pegasus books just down the lane.

stopped for lunch and neither of us could resist the pho. i had beef, my husband had the chicken. we both enjoyed the bowls and found the serves generous enough that we couldn't finish the broth. completed the meal with a vietnamese coffee. delicious.

we came down left bank heading towards oriental kingdom with our bottle of wine but decided to come here. we had the rice paper rolls for entree which were amazing, the highlight being the satay sauce that comes with it. for mains we had the lemongrass chicken and duck and bamboo noodle soup. both had a good flavours and well worth the smaller price tag. good friendly service. not a bad experience at all 😊
