relaxing, great restaurant off the beaten path

first timer, but won't be the last, restaurant is alittle off the beaten path but worth looking for...salads were excellent, beet salad, kale caesar and the parma with artichokes over arugula, take your pick they are all fantastic. our waitress was excellent, right on with service but not obnoxious, gave us time in between courses. for our entrees we had the fish and chips (light served with a excellent home made tartar) meatloaf (too much to finish) risotto and swordfish...all were excellent ....we really didn't have room for dessert, but we couldn't pass up on the ganache, cheesecake or chocolate bread pudding.....ambiance and decor are great, there is also outside seating if you are interested.....would highly recommend

wanted to find a good lunch spot and this site helped us pick this place. great place with great food at a fair price with great service. also the main room has great ambiance. we order duck, pork ribs and fish and chips. great location in wood we really like it.

loved the cozy and pleasant atmosphere and the food and beer was absolutely perfect. enjoyed a schneider-weiss on draft, tasty fish and chips, and the chocolate ganache dessert.

best breakfast ever! everything tastes so fresh! can't wait to go back. a very popular place, there's always a wait but it moves quickly. the pineapple and orange juice combo was really good.

light horse tavern turned out to be a lovely spot with great character. it’s spacious and bright, especially if you’re seated by one of the large windows. wooden interiors, exposed brick, historical touches… i’ve been watching sleepy hollow lately and couldn’t help but wonder what ichabod crane would think of this place.

i ordered the gnocchi ($18) that every almost review i’ve read about this place raves about. sounds like they might change up the ingredients seasonally. but it was my lucky day as it was a mushroom gnocchi when i visited! you all know how much i love a good mushroom dish. ;) gnocchi with wild mushrooms, golden cauliflower, and arugula in a mushroom broth topped with parmesan cheese. it looked and smelled spectacular. oh my! the soft, pillowy gnocchi just melts in your mouth. just thinking about the gnocchi right now is making me hungry.

visiting new york, drive around jersey city to find lunch and noticed how busy this place was. decided to eat lunch out on the patio. service was good, not excellent a little slow getting drinks but then very attentive. ordered the calamari to start, and it was amazing, some of the best calamari i've had, lightly breaded with a great homemade dipping sauce. then ordered the lobster blt for my entree, and all i can say is it was one of the best things i have every eaten, it was amazing! i highly recommend this place for lunch!

used to be a favorite of mine, but a recent experience with mediocre food and service has turned me off to the light horse.
i've heard they have a new chef, so i'll give the light horse another chance soon.

fierce76. had brunch here on 01/07/12 with my mother in-law, wife and 2 year old son. went here because we had heard good things about it. let me start with positives - the venue is beautiful and the kinda place you can go to for many different occasions - just a beer, brunch, dinner etc. the food was ok (steak&eggs - worst i have had since arriving in the us 3 months ok - buts thats only because everywhere else i have tried is so much better) and the bloody mary's were the best i have ever tasted. negatives - the service - wow - it felt like we and guests on tables next to us were in an episode of fawlty towers - simply the worst service i have expierenced since coming and some of the worst anywhere i have ever had. how this place gets good write up's i do not know. the only place we have not tipped since coming - it was that bad!, from the manager all the way to the staff. everyone had bad attitudes (they were not understaffed on the day - if anything overstaffed) - how can people serve you this badly when they suppossedly rely on tipping here? spoke to a friend who lives close by to this place about our expierence and is from jersey - he said that he had been a while ago but would not go back because of the service also - said bad service might have been because we werent frequent patrons and so the mgnt and staff were probably less concerned as opposed to customers who are known. seriously i dont understand how this place has such a good rep. the mgnt and staff all need to be kicked out and people brought in who give a damn.

clearly the best overall dining experience in jersey city. great food, knowledgable service, in a welcoming setting.

great!. great menu and a beer list that is out of this world, without being overwhelming. raw bar is fanastic. love the neighborhood too!

great food!. we used to live around the area and light horse tavern is one of out favorite restaurants. great food and atmosphere.

a classic. whenever my family comes to visit, they insist on eating at the light horse tavern. and who could blame them? the food is always mouth-watering delicious.

over the years, the prices got a bit steep to keep up our habit of dining there 1-2 nights per week, but it just makes dining there all the more special.

my only gripe would be the live music as i can't enjoy the conversation of my companions at the table.
