“lexington barbecue” is a decidedly nebulous term. it can refer to a preparation (pork shoulder over hardwood coals), a sauce (vinegar-based with ketchup), a location (north carolina’s barbecue capital), or, in the case of this nationally recognized eatery, all of the above. that reputation helps lexington barbecue stay perpetually busy, but it isn’t just hype: the food is worthy of the fanfare.

all i can say is authentic. it was worth the drive from greensboro to taste the juicy, tangy coarse chopped pork. my boyfriend and i seek out bbq places and are from texas. the meat in nc is not as dry, or as spicy but viva la differance! the slaw is real tangy and the meat melts in your mouth. crinkle cut fries make a nice side and the sweet tea is served with a slice of lime which was a nice chage of pace. definitely check it out!

they call it lexington #1 for reason. this has always been for me, and for many folks, the very best of the lexington style of pork bbq. folks who insist that only eastern nc bbq is worth eating are missing some very good bbq - their loss - it is like always having your eggs cooked one way.

either the sandwich or the plate is the way to go. the slaw is the reddish bbq slaw, and is among the best of this type. the hush puppies are always solid, if not spectacular. they even make a decent hot dog, but even with my professed love of hot dogs, i rarely order it here - the bbq is the prize. they also serve, honest to god, a pork skin sandwich, which is actually pretty good, but get it without the slaw - less messy and you can taste the flavor of the nice skins.

the service is fast and good, they move people through. in addition, this is one of the few places where you can call and order a whole shoulder, and pick it up in 30 minutes or less.

great. bbq and truly fantastic slaw. fairly simple menu, but when you do what you do as well as these folks, you don't need anything else. i wish they'd open up more.

quite possibly the best barbecue joint in lexington, nc. lexington, nc is known as the barbecue capital of nc. somehow this barbecue joint knows how to make barbecue so that it is never dry or too wet. i like to order mine "course chopped." the hush puppies are wonderful too. the local penchant for red cole slaw escapes me though. their french fries are not memorable either. but you go here for the barbecue and the hush puppies, nothing else.

don't waste your time. sandwiches are tiny. slaw does not taste good. menu is poorly worded. bbq sauce is excessively watery. there is no hope for this place.

retired elevator manager. i moved from atlanta in 1978 to virginia. i returned to bham, al to visit my family for the past 37 years. prior to i 85 being completed, the temp i 85 passed by lexington,nc. and lexington barbeque. i decided to stop with my wife and try their barbeque. since that stop i have always stopped both passing and returning to va. if you want the best barbeque possible there is where you should stop.my wife and i never take the new i 85 route, we always !!!!! stop at the restaurant
on the old i 85. the original owner retired a few years ago and his son and grandson have taken over the business. i traveled with a friend to charlotte on october 25, 14 and stopped going and returning the same day. they open at 10 am monday through saturday and prior to opening at 10 am patrons are already waiting for it to open. it is unbelievably busy from the time it opens until it closes.

the waitresses are unbelievable, the service is impeccable, and you never have to wait for your meal .it will delivered by any of the waitresses or the owner himself. the majority of the employees have been there for as long as three decades!! they share the tips at the end do the day. this is one of the only restaurants that i have patronized that has this type of service. that is why the service is great and quick.

i have introduced many of my friends about this restaurant and superb food and service and no one has ever disagreed with me.

thanks lexington barbeque for providing the food and service to both me and my wife !!!!!!!

your patron from virginia

the meal at lexington #1 was absolutely perfect. we’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again – if you want barbecue, be it eastern, western, lexington, memphis or texas, this is the gold standard, top of the mart meal. everything else is just trying to play catch-up.

not worth the hype. lexington bbq is tasteless, bland and not worth the hype. we made a special trip to lexington because we love trying new bbq restaurants and had read wonderful reviews of the food. what a mistake! the minced pork had an odd consistency comparable to mush. was it really pork? i ate a few bites and that’s all i could stomach. i know this is a famous restaurant; however, growing up in kansas city has spoiled my tastebuds for the true rich smokey flavor of slow cooked bbq. if you’re from the midwest, skip lexington bbq.

lexington #1 may be the most famous of all the lexington style barbecue joints... a precarious proposition for our barbecue crew if the joint doesn't have a focus on excellence and attention to detail. without a solid, repeatable, process-driven approach, there are just too many variables in cooking barbecue to ensure that the product on the tables lives up to the hype. i'm happy to say that this place lives up to the expectations. an authentic barbecue experience where everything on the table rated very good or above.
