los angles glamour

i had the most fabulous time here. my jaw dropped when i walked in - i felt like i stepped back in time. it looks like a glamorous 1930's supper club.

we all had the prime rib. it was cooked to perfection and i cut mine with my fork. it was the best prime rib i ever had. the horseradish was especially tasty and the cream corn was delicious.

i love lawry’s. their food is excellent, and its a place to celebrate a special occasion or a a fancy night out. having said that, the beverly hills location is probably my least favorite of the lawry’s locations.

the last time i was at lawry’s beverly hills was probably the worse day, valentine’s day.  this visit was on june 26, a sunday and we were here to celebrate my grandmother’s 88th birthday.

known for their prime rib that comes to the table by a server that hand carves it in front of you. they also cook it to perfection based on your preference. i went with the medium-rare and that was the juiciest piece of rib i've eaten. they also serve a side of traditional yorkshire pudding, creamed corn or spinach and a few other sides. the hero was the rib.

had a great time, this place was a lot of fun , went with 3 football buddies, i was the smallest guy 6.4 250 so you can imagine we could really put it away, which is what we did, the prime rib is fantastic, the service is very prompt and timely, the meat was cooked to perfection, my buddies ordered the lage cut while i opted for the lite cut, much to enjoyment of my friends who hassled me through the whole meal, as it was i barely finished and my hand was shaking when i brought the last bite to my mouth, however one of my table mates cleaned his plate so good the bone from the rib that was left over looked like it was beached in the sun, anyway this is a great place to visit its the name sake of lawrys seasoning and its a bit of history as well as a great meal, i go back everytime i am in la

lawry’s is a place you go for a nice evening out.  we usually frequent the las vegas location, and it is a quiet restaurant, very romantic, and also not that cheap.

we went to the beverly hills location the day before valentine’s day.  the place was…well, a zoo.  people were everywhere, and there was wall to wall people.  apparently lawry’s hired a photographer to take “souvenir” photos and they had a table set up, literally blocking the front entrance.  i have no idea when these people took pictures, as i was there for 2 hours and never saw a photographer.

we arrived at 7:20 for our 7:30 reservations. while we waited, we found a room that had meatballs and potato chips to munch on as a snack, which was a nice touch.  for a place that will be charging $125 + per couple for dinner, there were a lot of kids on valentine’s day weekend, as well as a lot of people dressed like they just rolled out of bed, with shorts, flip flops, t shirts, sweat pants… what the hell?! i thought there was a dress code? don’t say “oh, that’s la people” because i am a southern california native, born and raised.  its called manners and upbringing, and some of these people don’t get that you dress up when going out to a nice place.

las vegas has a lot of booth for couples. beverly hills is a larger venue, catering to groups, offering a lot fewer intimate booths. the dining room is more open, but less walking space.  many people kept bumping into each other, or had trouble passing by as the waiter, the carving trolley or people in general kept congesting the walkway.  you also get to know your neighbor intimately, as my neighbor was literally an arms length away.

the valentine's dinner menu for 2 was not as attractive as i thought.
for $125 per couple you get:
- the famous salad (a given)
- a california cut prime rib with a choice of creamed corn or spinach
- a small flute of champagne (sparkling wine)
- 4 chocolate covered strawberries to share
- jar of the cc brown chocolate sauce to take home.

after adding up the cost, you're paying $31 for the champagne, berries and jar of chocolate.  no coffee? so we went off the menu and got the prime rib, the corn and spinach (served on the side, not plated), a huge white chocolate banana bread pudding for dessert, 2 coffees and a cocktail for $119.

there's more! i had 2, $25 bonus gift cards from christmas plus 2, $25 vip points to use.. so our valentine's dinner came to less than $19. i still love lawry's but this location is just too busy and too noisy.  i'd rather wait until i return to vegas for old school service, and enjoy my meal in a more romantic setting.

3-stars for this location, and not because it was the saturday before valentine's day, but because the place doesn't enforce a dress code.

every year i approach restaurant week with a little bit of apprehension. restaurant week usually serves as a loss leader for businesses, and while i'm well aware that most places take to inventing cheaper, inferior menu items so that they can profit from what will most likely be one-time clientele, the opportunity to try a new place, to open a new door i can rarely afford to open is impossible to resist. unfortunately this often leaves me disappointed.

if you're wanting a large piece of prime rib with vegetables optional, this is your place. you can opt from normal size piece of meat to omg that's a half a cow. truly, everything else is crap but the meat is excellent.

everything about this restaurant was great. truly picking one food group and doing it right seems to work for this restaurant. the prime rib was outstanding as was the lobster. some of the best we ever had. the food was only surpassed by the service as our waitress isabella was phenomenal. my only negative comment might be the free appetizers. the meatballs were cold and the chips were empty and the area where you sit needed to be bussed as not enjoyable sitting with other people's half eaten food in front of you. other than that, a perfect 10.

as it turns out, the fare is actually decent – until you get to the main course, in which my standard fare, the size that is most commonly ordered, arrives on your table looking like a steak on steroids, accompanied by ugly, rich and tasteless vegetable sides. all served in a way that reminds me of cafeteria food, food that should be eaten and then promptly forgotten about. this was not what i expected from a supposed “four-star” restaurant.
