relaxing, elegant, that pampered feeling. a number of friends we know had recommended latitudes as a "must" in key west. now i can see why.
this restaurant is part of the westin and is not located on key west but on a smaller key just to the west called sunset key. from what we could determine, all of the other structures on sunset key were also owned by the westin and were called the sunset guest cottages. in any case, to get to the restaurant, you have to take a motor lauch from the westin to sunset key and you must be either a guest of the sunset guest cottages or have reservations at latitudes. the do have a list and they do check it twice although i did not see any signs of a sleigh and eight tiny reindeer.
trip to the key (almost made a mistake and called it an island) is about a 15 minute cruise and is very relaxing. the launch during dinning hours leaves every 30 minutes but not sure about the rest of the day.
after you dock, you want through a gazebo and up a walk and informal garden to the entrance. there a host or hostess escorts you to your seat and after a bit of brief introductions, present you with you menu followed by the appearance of your server at about the same time. servers work several tables but if they see someone with an empty coffee cup at another servers table, they jump in to make sure the customer is kept happy. this is not done in a competitive fashion or trying to outpreform another server but rather the goal is to keep the customer satisfied. excellent execution and the sign of good training and good management.
we tried numerous items for dinner starting with the mozzarela fried green tomatoes and seafood cocktail as appetizers and then scallops with mushroom risotto and lobster with polenta and asparagus. everything was perfect and would order again. unique presentation with the green tomatoes but the flavor balance is perfect. the scallops and lobster dishes were great and both are hard to prepare because it's too easy to overcook and end up with something with a texture of rubber and no taste.
atmopshere was excellent and to she why, take a look at some of the pictures posted with this reveiw. large bombay fans over the dining area, open patio leading to the beach, graceful palm trees, white linen and a live orchid on each table. the rest of the atmosphere is the staff and they only add to the experience.
our freinds and neighbors recommended this restaurant and i will not hesitate to recommend it to others. good find and as good as any i've found elsewhere in the country with the only difference, this one is more relaxing and comfortable.
