the dog sauce is most certainly, the boss. having only this one opportunity, rather than putting myself in the position of having to choose just one, i decided to get something from both american and lafayettes. we went here first and immediately fell in love with the dingy, old time vibe and setup. after a moment of watching the dogs sizzle on the flattop i ordered a chili cheese dog and after he slapped it together right before my eyes, i carried it over to a long table where we were soon greeted by a another gentleman who asked what we would like to drink. after that was dealt with i took a bite. the chili was beautiful; saucy, not runny or oily, with just the right amount of finely minced meat to compliment the thick texture of the sauce. the wife took a couple clips off the thing and agreed, which is why i pay her the big bucks. after i devoured the rest of the mother, we paid the gentleman, made the sign of the cross and walked next door. but thats for another review, which i will write after i finish this one. i will say this though; everything i loved about the character of this place was nowhere to be found at american and the chili didnt hold a candle to the stuff i had just eaten over here
grade: a (this place made me feel like i was in an old ny city place for a second, before i realized that no, i was in the heart of the motor city, eating a detroit style coney. exactly what i was aiming for)
