i went to komeyui for my partner’s birthday.
i ordered two foie gras chawanmushi and the butter garlic sea snail to start with.

i should’ve ordered a blue swimmer crab chawanmushi instead of two foie gras. the foie gras was nice but too heavy when it combined with the egg. the sea snail tasted buttery but it was more like the butter that made it tasty than itself.

we then ordered some premium toro sushi, sea urchin, king fish, scampi , abalone , sword fish, scallops.

great presentation. really fresh sushi. wasabi was also fresh shaven , not the fake one you get from a packet.

toro- good. melt in your mouth. it was like $15 per toro sushi. it tasted good but then of course you cant compare to the ones you get from japan.

sea urchin- was really fresh but it wasnt the really sweet buttery taste ones that i’ve been searching for.

king fish- fresh and fatty. get that.

i love the sword fish- it was sweet and tasty. i eat king fish all the time but i don’t get sword fish that often in aus, so i recommend trying that.

scallops were seared , fresh as well but nothing out of ordinary.

we had the sake creme brûlée and matcha roll cake for dessert. they were both really good.

we were happy with the service but then it was really busy at the start and there weren’t enough waitresses around, so sometimes we had to wait for a long time to get their attention. we sat at the bar so we get to see sushi making in action.

i would go back again if i felt like treating myself. i would also try other things

thought it was fine dining given the prices so we came dressed to match but environment turned out to be casual. came here for a special occassion and tried the omakase 7 course degustation. degustation menu was mainly seafood (different from the one on zomato and on their website).

pros: quality ingredients, enjoyed most dishes. cons: some dishes were too rich and not to our palette including the fois gras and dessert.

portion wise dishes were small but we were satisfied.

we sat at the bar to watch the chefs do their magic. was entertaining to watch but only one of our courses was made in front of us the rest brought out from the kitchen. pace wise it could have been slower as at times we felt rushed and couldn't properly enjoy our experience.

additionally, ordered a bottle of french wine - waitress gave us the wrong french wine (opened a more expensive one) - only noticed once we got the bill. would advise to double check when ordering wines. overall, would probably return to try individual dishes. would recommend for the experience.

komeyui is a great date night place, i've been there multiple times and i can attest to the amazing quality and superb ingredients they use at komeyui.

seasonal specials such as the truffle chirashi with foie gras is so delectable. and of course their uni sashimi and selection of tuna can't be beat.

and it's not only the food that's exquisite but the service as well. very easy to make a booking and the head chef and owner kuma is super friendly and always ready to answer any question you may have.

just writing up this review got me thinking when to book my next table. :)

hands down for their nori crunch 🔥 if you’re a fish roe lover then this should be one of your favourites. generally, food is good. could be a little bit pricey but definitely worth a try. p/s: really love the sake creme brûlée!

i don't know what all the fuss is about! decent japanese food but small serves and very expensive. the highlights for me were the nori crunch and spicy tuna rolls. the pork gyozas were also quite good although way overpriced at 6 for $22. the miso cod and dengaku were both disappointing.

one of my fav japanese restaurant in melbourne 😋. we ordered the nori crunch, chawan mushi, eel " hitsumabushi", spring special shabu shabu with king fish, matcha roll cake and sake crème brûlée. highly recommend the nori crunch, chawan mushi and sake crème brûlée !
also, staff are friendly and service is good. although a bit pricey but wouldn't mind paying extra for the great quality food.

food- 10/10
service - 9/10
ambience- 8/10
overall- 9/10

quality is waning at what was once my favourite restaurant. we’ve been going to komeyui for 3 years...something has changed. last week we took guests from overseas, and the fish was a bit rubbery - it did not taste fresh - and the portion sizes have gotten smaller - whilst the prices have gone upwards. the waiter also looked disheveled - his pants and shirt were far too big (his sleeve was touching our food) and his vest was incredibly dirty - all covered with left over food. a disgusting sight to be honest! the quality of patronage has also gone down - a number of ‘international’ patrons were wearing tracksuits and were being very loud.

a year ago i booked online and received an email confirming my booking only to show up on the day at the right time to be told that my booking unfortunately did not exist, and that they had no record of my booking in any of their systems. our same party of 4 finally had the chance to try komeyui and we were not disappointed. the assorted sashimi platter was fresh and had a variety of seafood including garfish, swordfish and scallops. the chawan mushi with foie gras was smooth and so full of flavour. the pork kakuni was melt in your mouth. just some of my favourites. the service was impeccable, warm and friendly. highly recommend for fabulous food and fantastic value.

great staffs, awesome foods. even better than some fine dinning that cost twice as much. price can still be expensive but feel worth every bit of it. my bf was very happy that i told him this is the best japanese restaurant i ever been (can tell how happy he is by the last photo haha)

the best japanese place in melbourne for my liking. love the chirashi the most. they have different combinations by the season of different ingredients. beside the price everything is perfect!

food was divine. we had the deep fried school prawns to start and they were so addictive. the sashimi was also fresh. the black cod was the highlight of our dinner. service was excellent and thoughtful.

celebrated my birthday at komeyui - good ambiance, not too loud/packed and the food was good.

the special sashimi platter offers 32 pieces (14 kinds) of sashimi and is my favourite dish of the night. the oz tongue was a little tough (probably overdone?) and the berkshire pork kakuni slices literally melts in your mouth. black cod “saikyo-yaki” is a char-grilled miso marinated cod that was a tad too salty for my liking.

we were also give a slice of the complimentary honey dew drizzled in honey - it was very sweet and fresh.

after everything, we had the komeyui sake creme brûlée and the staff had kindly decorated the mini cake with a candle and well wishes written in chocolate ink on the plate - a nice touch from the restaurant!

what could be improved would be the professionalism of the staff and the price is a little hefty considering on the quality and location. i can and would rather eat at nobu than here for the same amount of price though.

one of the best japanese restaurants in melbourne!! sushi is fresh and atmosphere is quite authentic. definitely one of the more expensive stores considering the portion and location but the food speaks for itself
