it's about location.... i didn't go in with high expectations, given that it's in lahaina (touristy) and by the water (pricey for the food). that being said, service was friendly and prompt for most courses. we had decent drinks too (wicked wahine, mango colada).
the starter caesar salad was 'famous' by their own claim; i thought it was tasty, but nothing that special. the carrot muffin as 'side bread' was interesting (moist, good flavour... interesting choice of side). our meals were good but not great. my husband had some kind of encrusted fish, which he liked, and i had the koloa pork ribs (plum sauce). they were tender, nice ribs, but the sauce was too plentiful even for me (i go nuts with sauce when i make ribs, so this had to be a bit much) and the flavour of the sauce didn't excite my taste buds as much as a regular or hot-ish barbecue sauce normally would. oh well, i thought it was worth a try, and i needed a change from fish. the wheatberry/orzo/basmati rice side was neat, as were the salsa sides (pineapple, etc).
the real reason we went is that my husband was on a mission to have hula pie. there again, i wasn't holding out for an eye-popping treat. i'd already read up on it and it's just some massive ice cream pie on cookie crumbs with fudge topping, whipped cream and mac nuts. tasty? yes. enormous? to a fault. genius? no. it was what it was, we conquered it, paid the bill and left full.
the view is admittedly nice; we sat upstairs near the railing (not right next to it) and we got to see the sun set, and the torches were lit, etc... so yeah, that's what you're coming for. you just happen to get a good if not inventive meal with it.
