while in south seattle to attend a polynesian festival (which turned out to be disappointing), we left and went to lunch at a small family restaurant in the georgetown neighborhood in south seattle.  it was located in a out-of-the-way industrial area. when we arrived around noon, the restaurant was full, and there was a short wait.

i will never go here again.  i called in a lunch order with only 3 items and they got it wrong.  and i called it in well before the lunch rush started at 10:45.  not only did they get the order wrong but when i got back to work i figured out my bill because it seemed excessive and ... they overcharged me by 3 bucks.  i regret tipping as the service certainly wasn't worthy of a tip and on top off all that, the pork adobo was tough and chewy.   my rating... less than 0

to me, hawaiian food means plate lunches, with heavy influence from asia (musubi, fried rice, saimin), and other places such as portugal (malasadas) and of course, america (hamburger meat).  there are also food that are considered as native hawaiian cuisine, such as poi and lau lau.one of the established hawaiian restaurants in the greater seattle area is kauai family restaurant.  in the past, i have gone there every time to order my own plate lunch: almost always my favorite, lawai crispy ginger chicken; and occasionally, kalua pig.with my family, it was more fun to order an array of hawaiian food to sample.  we got my favorite, plus the oxtail soup that i had wanted to try; poi, the must-have hawaiian food, barbeque chicken plate with fried rice, portuguese sausage musubi and a big combo with lau lau, kalua pig and lomi salmon.my favorite remains my favorite.  exceptionally crispy and garlicky...

ono for kauai family restaurant. going here for a meal is as close to having a meal in the islands as i could imagine. from the loco moco to spam musubi, it's all about aloha. the interior is a wee bit shabby, but it's a homey feel, not in a neglected way. they have bakery items in a little shop adjacent to the dining area... pick up some tropical bakery items on your way out . i know i can't resist! they have malasadas which are my favorite thing ever! but only at certain times/days, so i would recommend calling ahead to find out availability.

just like in the islands. my wife and i just love this restaurant. she's partial to kalua pig (as am i) and i like the smoked pork, the lomilomi salmon, lau lau, and most everything i order. fabulous macaroni salad just like my aunty on oahu used to make. i also try to get there for the music on the second saturday of the month and make sure to get a bag of malasadas on any saturday. the service is nice, the folks friendly, makes me want to get back to the islands. there i have lots of places to eat but none better then here.

super cool people. i always get the kahlua pig and ahi poke. they have cakes from cakes of paradise and those do not suck. i don't think they serve any alcohol. one of my favorite spots.

so good.. i think subconsciously i bought a house in georgetown just so i could make it for dinner on thursday and/or friday. the food is so good here. i bring any new employee here and any body else that either visits from out of town or a new friend. i think out of the number of people i've brought to this delicious hole in the wall only 1 didn't care for it. i'm a creature of habit here, kalua pork with fried rice and mac salad. i sometimes get the cucumber kimchee and use the extra spice liquid to coat the pork. the peter's special smoked pork is also fantastic. actually i really haven't had anything i don't like here.

i will be back!. my friend owed me a lunch for driving him around town. he suggested this hawaiian place in g'town. i really wasn't expecting too much. i had a bacon cheeseburger and it was tremendous! one of the best burgers i have had in a long time. i was also really suprised how gorgeous the chef in back was (usually ladies that hot rarely are willing to work that hard). needless to say i will give the kfr a solid thumbs up!

memories of my eating spree in hawaii. good chicken long rice, although i'd love a little bit more broth. crispy ginger chicken a little over-fried, but great flavor.

-----06 dec, 2008-----

on my "to return to" list.. although the crust was a bit wet and soggy, the rich and flavorful macadamia cream pie was delicious. looking forward to returning for the passion fruit cake and the savory dishes.
